amanverjee - 22 June 2024 Departures from Stoker's movel The movie was marketed as being based on the captain's log from the DEMETER, the ship that brought Dracula from Carpathia to London. But there are several significant departures from the novel that I think made the story weaker.
Most notably, in Stoker's novel there were several notes in the diary that indicated the Dracula appeared in human form. But in this movie, we never see him in this form, not even at the end when he appears in the Tavern. Apparently, the intent is to show Dracula only as a loathsome monster, missing the real complexity of the Dracula character.
In addition, gone is the power of Christian symbols to contain Dracula. Perhaps in our culture today, it is unacceptable to suggest that Christianity has power over you.
jmbovan-47-160173 - 17 May 2024 I wanted to like it more The Last Voyage is a nice looking film. The story elements are solid. Characters have depth and heft to them. The dilemmas and threats in the film bring the needed tension and suspense so that you'll be near the edge of your seats.
And "near" is what this film masters, but unfortunately, that leaves a bit left out of it.
The confines of a ship create a tense atmosphere. And, at the same time, the close quarters lends a sense of impracticality to the story unfolding with realistic expectations. (I know; a film about a vampire shouldn't be expected to be realistic.) But, the fact there is a supernatural creature preying on the crew of the ship without earlier awareness of it occurring is implausible.
While I did like the film, it felt of having a lesser overall experience. The pieces were all there, but they never quite came together for a better film. Quality pieces, but somehow there are key pieces missing from the overall product.
djrmc24 - 7 April 2024 An Average Horror Tale The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a pretty straight forward horror film that doesn't raise the bar. It's formulaic and straight forward. Dracula terrorizes a whole bunch of sailors on a ship. There are a couple of jump scares here but not as much as I would have liked. Also I am not a fan of the design of Dracula in this film as it's very generic/CGI looking. The saving part here is the acting is very strong for this type of movie. If you are looking for a quick horror movie to turn to that is harmless yet not raising the bar, then check this one out. The Last Voyage of the Demeter gets 6 stars out of 10.
