    Cheesier than a Philly cheesesteak
Another example of the DCEU trying too hard to branch out to an audience that isn't really there, 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' is a sequel that no one was asking for.

The continuing adventures of a rag-tag group of Philly foster kids turned superheroes feels suitable for a Disney+ series, but it doesn't hit in a 130-minute film that is intended to appeal to the same fanboys that grew up reading the comics. It's even more odd given the plot, which involves ancient gods played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and...Rachel Zegler(?) coming down to Earth to wreak some havoc.

Don't get me wrong - Zachary Levi doesn't do a bad job as the titular character, but this a good film does not make. It's really the Jack Dylan Grazer show, as his "Freddy" is featured prominently throughout the film, and as written, this character is just downright irritating. But it's not just the acting. It's the plot. It's the general silliness. It's the disorganization.

Sure, 'Shazam!' was never meant to be one of the A-list films in DC's library, but the character deserves much better than this.

Trying too hard to be funny...and failing
The first movie had comedy but I felt it was more measured than in this unfortunate sequel. While the plot has merit the film spends way too much on childish antics and grand stupidity instead of focusing on a story that shows Billy and his siblings how to deal with their new found powers. I don't blame the actors in this case but on the director. The special effects are good enough and the villians are worthy. I do challenge the whole 'lets do a bunch of quick shots to build excitement' style of filmmaking that has overtaken the movies, but I expect that. What I really wanted was less cheese and more meat. Definitely not a movie I would watch again, but good enough for a single view.

    Entertaining
The film fulfills its mission to entertain. It really has better animation than the latest Marvel movies. Film that despite lasting 2 hours, keeps you entertained, has its emotional moments, comedy, good character development. The problem with DC is that they have not managed to form a DC universe, it has 2 post-credit scenes that it intertwines with the universe, however, the future of the DC franchises is unknown, whether they will restart it or not. It's about how Billy and his brothers try to balance their lives as superheroes with their lives as children or teenagers, also without their adoptive parents realizing it, and how they have to fight against The Daughters of Atlas.
