athanasiosze - 11 June 2024 2/10. By far, the worst Shyamalan's movie. Not only Shyamalan's worst movie of course, but one of the worst movies i have ever watched. And i am not even a hater, for example, i think that THE HAPPENING is passable. I even liked his latest (KNOCK AT THE CABIN). However, there is not the slightest redeeming quality here. There is a promising start and then, it gets worse by the minute. At some point, this movie looked like an inside joke or something, it was like actors were not even trying because they knew subconsciously this was gonna be a failure. At some point, script didn't even make sense. And there is -to say at least- a really controversial scene here.
gloupy99 - 20 April 2024 you can't remain unmoved Watching a movie from Shilamayan is always an experience.
We go through his films with anxiety, we wait for the final punchline, and there is no shortage of it. This film is cruel, terribly human in its dark side. A very good movie.
We quickly learn to hate the beach, we feel claustrophobia under the open sky. It's terribly effective.
Frankly, we hope that it's a collective nightmare and that they will wake up, but no, it's real, relentless. Thank you for this film Mr. Shilamayan.
We recommend this movie, the horror side is definitely a matter of mind, it's not a graphical horror movie..scary, simply.
amandabitts-83586 - 13 February 2024 What's up with all the negative reviews???? Ok, this is not a masterpiece or anything, but come on... "worst movie one has ever seen?". No way!!!!
It's surely not an Academy Awards nominee or something, but the movie is coherent, gets your attention, keeps you wondering, has the right amount of surprise factor and it just makes sense (sorta). I mean, everything is explained and you don't have that feeling of watching a whole movie just to end up with a bunch of loose ends.
And the ending gets you thinking if there wouldn't be powerful people in real life who could be led up to do just the same, given the possibility of such a place even existing. Ouch!!
rwstreb - 28 December 2022 I know he can do better, so why didn't he? Shyamalan has done some great movies, as well as some duds, but I can currently only think of one movie ever- not his- I may have disliked more, and both for mainly the same reason- they just would not end.
The story mostly gets covered in the trailer. If you like the trailer, make up your own twist ending and spend the nearly two hours you've saved on something more interesting, like staring at your shoes. The story did have details, aside from the required twist, that were not in the trailer, but they often did nothing to move the story along. Even when the twist finally reared its head we were still not granted relief, and an overused but generally annoying writing device was used as a crutch to drag it out even longer.
There were some odd and annoying techniques used throughout the film that made me wonder- surely that was not his intention? Maybe a poor film school college nephew of someone attached to the film did some editing and Shyamalan didn't watch the final cut? I literally was not sure whether or not there was some sort of malfunction at times with some of the annoying devices. I also thought at times the playback speed might have been higher than normal, and rather than try and fix it I was wishing it would go even faster.
This film would have more of a Night Gallery feel to the writing than Twilight Zone if that sways any opinions, although that is certainly not a comparison of writing quality. I would have much preferred no twist, but rather the point of the twist being the main focus of the story. There was far more potential for entertainment from that angle.
I know some people actually liked this movie, and I cannot for the life of me understand why, but I would not recommend this to anyone unless they just absolutely wanted to see all of Shyamalan's work, or possibly if it was for research in film school. I suspect that if a film school dropout with an $8 budget had made this film, I would have rated it slightly higher, but the name attached to it demands better quality.
jeromesgabilo - 6 November 2022 POOR WRITING It was my first M. Night Shyamalan film and after watching it, I think it would be my last. There was something about the production and mood of the film that did not sit quite right with me. The scenes were mediocre and premature. None of it was unengaging and exciting. I think the plot was taken too seriously and executed in such a way that it was almost not fun to watch anymore. The cinematography and editing were good but those did not save the film from being just another forgettable and rushed kind of film. None of the characters stood out. The mood didn't quite capture the impending doom in the movie.
prtzg - 8 October 2022 Ok. I am done with Shyamalan! I have always enjoyed M Night Shyamalan. His efforts to make original films deserve respect. But with OLD, he has just reached a level of mediocrity rarely seen for a director of his caliber. This time I am done with him. The basic idea is brilliant. But this film destroys minute by minute the original idea and all that remained of Shyamalan's credibility. The actors are terrible. They look lost. As if we were observing an actor in improvisation mode. Or probably, as if there were no direction and no director on the shooting site. It makes you wonder if Shyamalan didn't actually spend all the filming on his cliff watching the filming from afar through his binoculars. The dialogues... insane. Stupid. Sound quality... poor. In the middle of the film the sound changes. Clearly studio-recorded audio was added in post-production. I can only think of the people who paid to see this film in the cinema. An insult.
