happyspaceinvader - 26 June 2024 Fun in parts, but story is all over the place I love intrigue, I love movies that show things out of sequence and I'm not particularly bothered by films that leave things unexplained.
That said, "Nope" seems to go out of its way to confuse the audience with really poor editing and implausible situations. And everyone's describing it as "part horror, part comedy"... but I didn't spot any obvious comedy. Was I supposed to find characters saying "nope" funny? Was that it?
SPOILERS
The whole subplot about a chimpanzee going wild on a TV set and mauling the actors was completely superfluous and added nothing to the movie. I get that it's supposed to provide motivation for the character of Jupe, but the way the movie is edited it seems like it's related to the alien activity, which it isn't. It just felt like misdirection added to pad the runtime.
The characters in the movie make really extraordinary decisions that just don't seem realistic. Emerald's ultimate plan to defeat the alien ("Oh I know, a giant helium balloon will finish it off") is completely random and comes absolutely out of nowhere. And, on that point, why does helium (a light and inert gas) cause the alien to explode when it's already been flying about completely unharmed by an atmosphere that's 79% nitrogen (a similarly light and inert gas)?
The editing is bizarre: many scenes cut to black way earlier than seems natural - a stylistic choice maybe, but just felt abrupt in that way amateur films sometimes do. There are other odd scenes that just don't seem to add anything to the movie, like the bit where the kids dress up as aliens to prank OJ. It kind of felt like the target audience are those with limited attention span, who would watch the movie while also chatting to their friends on social media.
At one point near the end a motorcycle rider (wearing a strange reflective helmet) from something called "TMZ" randomly turns up with no proper explanation... was I supposed know who he is, or what "TMZ" is? Well, excuse me for not being American (or a Zoomer addicted to social media).
There are some redeemable parts... the cinematography is incredible, and the alien is truly horrifying once you find out what it is, and what it does to the things it sucks up into the air. And there's some good dialogue courtesy of Keke Palmer who is incredible. But overall, the movie feels like a disjointed fever dream, the plot of which could have gone through a few more rounds of revision.
daisymilli - 9 June 2024 'Nope' is definitely a Yes! Another great movie from Jordan Peele. Amazing cinematography, concept and finished product. Was highly suspenseful and kept you keeping an eye out for all the little things. Definitely will be good for a rewatch. Those that will get this movie will love it but those who don't it will fly over your head (literally). Good commentary on the media and social media. Keke Palmer added a get bit of humour to the movie and it's always great to see her on screen.
Refreshing to see another alien that doesn't fit the stereotype of humanoid creature that we see in most horror/thriller/Sci-fi movies.
cozoscornelia - 10 May 2024 A huge disappointment Honestly i was hoping to see a movie that will have something, anything interesting or at least some reason to watch until the end. The first hour is extremely boring and after that some sort of comedy tries to set in but unfortunately very poorly written. It follows so many ideas and paths but it doesn't end any of them except the final one, the rest of the little stories seem like some sort of filling up the time but with no meaning whatsoever. I am really sorry I've lost 2 hours of my life watching this. Hope i will save someone else's 2 hours of their life. From my point of view it's not worth the time or the attention.
jaihindi - 12 January 2023 Engaging movie Quote imaginative and thoroughly beautiful. The lead pair playing siblings have done a great job and so does the supporting characters. The imagery is stunning and music as well is great. I watched it twice and understood some of the facts in second viewing. Those who are not liking the alien creature , I have to say an alien can not always be an octopus or a green humanoid. The vision here is somewhat different but the creature retains its horror. I liked it better than ' Us' and equal to 'Get out'. Again watch it for a good story and stunning cinematography. The locales used are beautiful to behold.
jwligtelijn - 8 January 2023 Boring and frustrating The movie is way too long and the characters are plain. Especially the performance of Keke Palmer is so over the top. Her acting style is not compliant with this story. Her brother OJ seems to be on a mixture of different kind of drugs through the movie. He simply does noy make any connection with the audience and just stares into the abyss for more than 2 hours. Visual effects are nice and the story is also interesting. But it just falls short for me. It's not horror, definitely not scary. There not a lot going on really except for the final half an hour. It never blew me away, surprised me, made me laugh or scared me. It's just a big nope for me.
donallenbraymer - 2 January 2023 Sub-standard fare Yes there are some semi-spoilers in this review. But I will separate the review at the appropriate point.
Any sci-fi horror picture has to meet a criterion that the monster has to be scientifically credible.
The reason that "Alien" was a massive hit with successful sequels is that the alien is believable. We are all taught about caterpillars turning into butterflies, the butterflies mate and create little piles of eggs, and the eggs become caterpillars. There is no telling what and egg grouping found in deep space, where the eggs are the size of 20 pound turkeys, would turn into.
Spoilers below
Despite various interesting personalities being portrayed in interesting manners, despite a pretty good job of bringing mounting tension to the screen, the monster is laughably portrayed, and scientifically, shall we say quite implausible.
Considerable screen time is spent displaying that wherever the monster appears, electrical machinery fails. This implies some sort of electromagnetic field, being generated by massive machinery. Electromagnetic pulse weaponry comes to mind. But then the monster turns out to be eating animals and humans. There is blood all over the place. The apparent intestines of the creature would make any decent b movie producer blush. The creature then goes into some form of metamorphosis, and ends up eating a hot air balloon, and the balloon explodes. There, now I have spoiled it for you. But no, the director did that when they completed the director's cut!
SafReviews - 30 December 2022 It's unique I'll give it that I didn't know anything about the movie before watching it other than it was a horror movie, but it's not like any other horror movie and I don't mean that in a good way. The movie starts a bit confusing, but as it goes on you start to understand the weird story. I felt like the tone of the movie was very slow, dull and boring which I guess was done deliberately, but I wasn't a fan of it as it didn't make me that much intrigued with the story. I had enough towards the end where they were playing with the UFO alien thing because I barley understood what they were trying to do and to be honest I didn't want to.
yoshotaguns - 27 December 2022 NOPE Should you watch this movie?
The answer is
NOPE, NO, NAH, NEVER, NOT EVEN, NOT CLOSE, NOT CAUSE, NO INDEED, absolutely not, most definitely no, most certainly not, naw, nay, nae, by no means, negative, under no circumstances, not really, no thanks, not on your life, not with your last breath, not with your last dollar, no siree, unfortunately not, negatory, nix, NG, nah bruh, hell nah, not today, not tomorrow, not this year. There is so many more ways to say no. However, I think I got my point across. The pacing was slow, the motive of the movie goes against the word NOPE. I'm not even sure if that was on purpose. The whole scene with the monkey attack is pointless.
dellamorte-82282 - 24 December 2022 Go Thought provoking. A genius concept muddled slightly in elaboration. The a+b plot is not seamless as to make the message standout. As is? It's obscured but; don't look to the unknown i.e seeking death because it will cast its gaze on you. It is a timeless, powerful message that can be interpreted as practically biblical.
The direction is decent, it services the story of isolation on the plains filled with decent vistas and landscapes. Don't look for ground breaking direction or camera cues from PEELE here however he articulates his story better while keeping the style simple. Compared to his other fare? Get out felt like a glorified twilight zone episode and Us was too complicated. Nope symbolizes PEELE'S best work to date. The story is PEELE'S most compelling, thought provoking and original in my opinion. The cast is decent with Palmer being the only real highlight Kahluuya is meant to be the stoic cowboy for the modern era this is felt through; numerous elaborations about the contemporary mentality and racial elaborations of the old west. It's just too bland and too stoic in delivery where it becomes alienating in itself at times (Which may have been the the actor's choice in conveyance thematically). The ending is truly great as well despite being very minutely open ended. The soundtrack is ok but the main theme riffing on the old west is definitely the standout. Don't check this out for any specific performances tho behind or in front of the camera, check this film out bc of the compelling narrative that is uniquely original and definitive in its delivery.
nicholaswrld - 18 December 2022 Nope is an Excellent film. Jordan Peele's latest release Nope had me and my uncle talking throughout most of the movie, and for good reason. We were intrigued, we wanted to find out more about the weird creature that had made its way to earth. Me and my uncle were trying to explain to ourselves how the alien worked and we were having so much fun doing so. Jordan Peele made an exceptional movie that I had so much fun watching. It is mysterious and I like that. I haven't watched many movies that had me thinking about it hours after I had finished it. It makes the viewer feel like they are actually interacting with the movie. It isn't a typical slasher or jump-scare ridden horror movie. It has depth, meaning and lots of metaphors. Jordan Peele did an amazing job portraying the alien. I am still thinking about it right now.
The only negative thing I have to say about this movie is that it is a little bit too long and it starts out very slow, though that isn't enough to bump this movie any lower than a 10/10. Good work Jordan Peele, this movie was my highlight of the year.
