gnperuti - 21 April 2024 Just goes to show what multiple viewings can do to one's opinion House of Gucci is definitely a love it or hate it film. When I first watched it, I loved it. Now, I'm a little more mixed. I still enjoy it, but not as much. One of the most common criticisms is the inconsistent tone. Honestly, though, I thought it was pretty consistent all the way through. What isn't consistent is the pacing. For a two and a half hour long movie, certain scenes feel a little rushed, especially in the first half. For example, we go from a conversation between some characters straight to the funeral of one of them. Kind of feels like a scene at his deathbed is missing in between. I can't help but wonder if this was a three hour movie at first and they had to cut it down. On the plus side, the second half slows down and lets the story and characters develop, though there's are a few moments where there are long pauses between dialogue that are unneededed, a problem Scott would also have in his next film, Napoleon. It's also not as funny as critics claim, but considering how it ends, I'm not so sure that's a bad thing, though it does have its moments.
With a cast this epic, you'd expect some incredible performances, and goofy accents aside, you'd be right. This is a personal best for Lady Gaga, probably second only to A Star is Born. And the rest mostly shines too, though I have to question why Al Pacino puts on a fake Italian accent when he already is Italian. Maybe he wanted to sound more like the character he plays, I don't know. The only performance that really doesn't work is Jared Leto. The first time I watched the movie, I thought his delivery and accent, even by the standards of the other accents, were a little too hammy, and unfortunately, it only gets worse with every viewing. I don't necessarily think he deserved his Razzie win, but the nomination was definitely warranted.
The costumes and sets are all fantastic and showcased beautifully by the direction. The outfits Gaga wears are especially awesome. And considering some of the infamous outfits she's worn in the past, that's quite an accomplishment. There are some unusual song choices, but they all work very well and some even make me laugh. One in particular that gets me every time is an Italian rendition of I'm a Believer. The film might be worth watching just for that.
Overall, I still had a good time with House of Gucci, but time hasn't been kind to it. And since it's only three years old, that's not a good sign. It's nowhere near the level of bad that we would later see with Napoleon, but it's also no Alien or Gladiator.
cankemalocak - 26 December 2023 Italian family speaking English with eachother with Italian accent! Why? Ok, you are going to say "this movie is intended for internaional viewers and mostly for Anericans" but I still don't see a point of Italian people talking to eachother in English with an Italian accent and even worse, using basic words in Italian like "ciao, si" in between sentences. If the director wants us to assume they are actually speaking Italian but we are hearing them in English, then why the accent and Italian words? This removes the sense of reality. This annoyed me so much during the movie. Other than that, Lady Gaga is not a good actress. Please stop trying to convince us that she is. Her overacting is making every movie she is in a school play.
jon_pratt12345 - 21 August 2023 Outlandish and inconsistent tone but it works A true-events based story of the Gucci family, their business and the struggles for power and influence within it. A strong cast on absolute showboating form, dialling up the acting to farcical levels. The accents are absurd and distracting. There is a great deal of inconsistency as the film veers between attempts at seriousness and a completely outlandish tone. Sometimes actors seems to be brining entirely different energy to the same scene. Jared Leto and Al Pacino bring the most chaotic vibes. It feels like the actors were given total freedom without any through-line of overarching tone. All that said, it somehow works. The set and costume design is really impressive and evokes a 90s European aesthetic. The bizarre unevenness in performances and overly long unfolding of the story strangely serves to give us a film that has an enjoyable and unique feel.
thalassafischer - 13 November 2022 Ridiculous Flashy Film If you want to watch something fun and mindless, a completely made-up soap opera, that is set in Italy for two hours, then this film is for you. In fact, the only reason I'm giving this film four stars instead of one or two is the Italian culture draw.
Otherwise, pass this flick by. It's awful, it's ridiculous, it's not even true. Yes, Patrizia Reggiani hired a hitman to kill her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci and there was family drama which led to the downfall of the House of Gucci as a business...but everything else about this film is a LIE.
Reggiani and Gucci met in 1970 not 1978. I guess Ridley Scott just wanted a "disco aesthetic"? Or was that Gaga's manipulation?
Reggiani was also not a middle class girl working for her pops when she met Gucci, she was a spoiled socialite with a wealthy step-father. So she ran in the same youthful social circles as young Maurizio Gucci, but was considered of a different social class from their elders, despite her step-father's wealth because of the nature of his work. Patrizia was also a student, and according to her daughters, loved to read prior to her brain tumor...which apparently changed her into a complete mad woman.
The anachronisms are shockingly bad. Who decided a George Michael tune from the late 1980s was a great atmospheric choice for a traditional Italian Catholic wedding in 1972? (Even if the director had decided to put the story fictionally in 1980...the song hadn't been written or performed yet, and it...it's just a poor aesthetic choice).
House of Gucci is difficult to watch if you know any details at all about the real Gucci family or the murder that inspired it. What's more is it's also difficult to watch as a fan of quality Italian cinema. This film could have been done beautifully in a giallo style from the 70s, but instead, it's a lot more like a stupid television show.
aravaioli - 26 September 2022 Entertaining but too american to be about an Italian family Rating in terms of entertainment would be 8 but the production unfortunately made it too unrealistic.
While some performances of this cast without italian actors was passable, notably Driver and Gaga (especially if you disregard her fake italian sccent which actually sounded spoken by a Romanian, of which I know many), the rest of the cast delivered terrible performances. Al Pacino is unfortunately unable to impersonata an italian person: he will always sound an italo-american from New Jersey: check how the real Aldo Guccci looked like and see what I mean. Pacino can act John Gotti, not Gucci, Agnelli etc. Those classier figures are not for him and selecting him for the role was as ridicolous as would have been selecting Hugh Grant to play Jesus Christ..
Then comes Leno, whose acting was pathetic only like his fake accent. I could continue.
Overall a missed opportunity for Ridley Scott to go beyond a purely american interpretation of an all-Italian story.
In all fairness I believe that an italian cast would not fare much better in acting an all American story (i.e. Monster's ball to mention one).
RosanaBotafogo - 26 August 2022 Good... Lady Gaga so eclectic that she became unrecognizable in this film, once again, beautiful and talented... I didn't know the trajectory of this family that became a world famous brand, ambition, wealth demanding a great tragedy, it was a lot of pity from little Alessandra to her little sister, orphans of father and mother, who remains imprisoned until today, despite the great performances, of a very perfect film, a certain exaggeration Oscar, somewhat overrated. Watching on a one-way plane to Orlando...
