bowmanblue - 18 June 2024 Not bad... for a requel I've been a fan of the 'Scream' franchise since the beginning. Yes, we all know the original is the best and the follow-ups have basically steadily declined in quality, but I still think they're fun and a cut above the average 'slasher' movie. So, how does 'part 5' compare? Well... it's good. Or does it just seem good because so many modern films are so bad?
Granted it offers nothing new. If you've seen one 'Scream' film (or 'slasher' flick in general) there's nothing here that will blow you away. A masked killer stalks and murders a selection of teenage victims until the final act where he's unmasked and ultimately defeated (until the next time, of course).
However, it seems that the original cast have been shelved and we're introduced to new protagonists called... I forget. They're generic teenagers, but one does seem to have a link to an original cast member from 1997. The initial characters may be a bit drab, but the writing saves them and there's some nice meta commentary on the genre and society. Luckily, the story takes a dramatic up-turn when the film-makers realise that they can't really make a 'Scream' movie without the original line-up of Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Counteney Cox - and they save every scene they're in.
So the story is pretty well set-up for a solid sequel with a good cast, writing and tried and tested premise. The problem for me was how some of the scenes just didn't make sense if you dared to think of the logic behind any of them. For a start the kills were pretty mundane. Yes, I guess there's a bit of blood and guts here and there, but nothing you haven't seen before and better/gorier. The part I couldn't get over was how most of the kills take place in a location that should be packed with people. It's like the killer has the superpower to teleport himself and his victim to an alternate dimension where only the two of them exist.
Maybe it's just nostalgia, or maybe it's because there are so many bad horror films on streaming services, but, despite it's many flaws, I enjoyed seeing the cast back for one last ride... before the obvious sequel arrives.
ma-cortes - 5 May 2024 Decent requel that pays a strong tribute to Wes Craven's original flm. New installment of the 'Scream' saga pays a fun homage to the popular series. Including familiar faces such as Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Marley Shelton, and Skeet Ulrich repeating their past roles with a touch of nostalgia and enjoyable memories. As a new killer dons the 'Ghostface' mask and starts targeting a group of teenagers, headed by Melissa Barrera, to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past. It's always someone you know !. The killer is on this poster !. Don't see it alone!
The nightmare has returned twenty-five years after those brutal murders took place in the town of Woodsboro, California, so a new murderer has returned executing a criminal spree in this acceptable film that "Chicago Sun-Time" considered the best film in the franchise since the first. All the cast that survived from the old pictures are back, adding newcomers, such as: Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Sonia Ammar and Kylle Garner. Directores Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett playfully tweak the cliches of teen slasher pics with this tongue-in-cheek thriller where there's again a mass slasher on the loose, there must be a group of teens 'just out for a good time'. The difference is both the killer and the victims have been raised on 80s , 90s 2000s splatter movies, and, therefore, know all the rules. Once again the stalker uses his cellular phone to terrorize his victims, he also uses to ask his prey trivia questions or offer critiques of successful terror films. Filmmakers and screenwriters add more of the satirical sparks that propelled the predecessor films into boxoffice hits by following the rules of original, they increase the suspense -everyone is a suspect- and gore to the popular franchise a hard one to tantalizing fun, making this outing to the known franchise a hard one to top.
The popular series is made up of : ¨Scream¨ 1996 by Wes Craven with Neve Campbell, Drew Barrymore, Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, Rose McGowan, Henry Winkler, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich. ¨Scream 2¨ 1997 by Wes Craven with Jerry O'Connell, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jada Pinkett Smith, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Kennedy. ¨Scream 3¨ 2000 with Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Neve Campbell, Lance Hentiksen. ¨Scream 4¨ 2011 with Lucy Hale, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Alison Brie, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Marley Shelton, Emma Roberts. ¨Scream VI¨ 2023 by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett with Courteney Cox, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Skeet Ulrich, Dermot Mulroney .
brendonstrevig - 25 January 2024 Too Full of Itself Scream has always been very Meta. Or at least pretending it is by acknowledging horror movie cliches and tropes. But this one takes it too far.
"Stab" has been a thing in the movies for a long time and it's basically a retelling of the first movie within their world. They make all these jokes and mentions about it which is really just them commenting on the franchise. It seems smart but it just feels like a cringey Deadpool.
These aren't amazing movies but the movie wants to pretend it is. Keeps bringing up past movies like people care or pay attention. It isn't the MCU.
The first 15 mins is great. Then super boring for 45 minutes. Then tries to play on nostalgia but I don't care. Courtney Cox is annoying. Dylan Minnette is the king of crappy movies. David Arquette is a joke. Skeet Ulrich still looks like a crack addict. Jenna Ortega isn't a good actress. She's just trendy. Same with Jack Quiad.
sgmi-53579 - 5 January 2023 Time for the requel. At this point, it's almost unnecessary to revive the Gen X staple "Scream" series, but here we are. Revisiting the first scenes of the original, we meet young Tara, home alone in her kitchen, when the phone rings. Ghostface is back... again. While she is hospitalized, we meet her group of friends, now all suspects, as well as her returning sister Sam, and her boyfriend Richie. They visit the reclusive retired sheriff for advice, who then contacts Gale Weathers and Sidney Prescott from the original film. Meta to the extreme, this will likely please the hardcore fans, but it offers little new in the way of a standalone film. It has some decent ideas for a slasher, bit much like the young "Stab" fans in the film, all but Scream diehards are likely to feel a little deflated. That said, it offers a good kick to reboot the series, and should please most horror fans.
mekid-33183 - 25 December 2022 So stupid I wish they would stop making these stupid teenager movies.... Can they get dumber than that? The girl who gets attacked in the hospital - the hospital is desert, there is absolutely no one there except a dead police officer.... Lol seriously in what reality do they live?
The killer was shot 3 times and he is ok, he is stronger than the terminator.... Ok he may have a bullet proof jacket but he would still be hurt.... So David arquette shoots him, and instead of finishing him off and remove his mask to see who it is, he just walks away to the elevator and he comes back to put a bullet in his head?
And the teenagers are so annoying, mostly the one with the wig who looks like Lionel Ritchie.
And when Prescott confronts the killer at the end, she goes in the house with a gun, doesn't even call the police lol Does she think she is Clint Eastwood or Denzel washington?
At the end they all get stabbed in the stomach or shot but they all run around and fight like nothing happened, this is so stupid omg I should sue the movie maker for wasting my time
Who writes these stupid scripts? At least make it a bit believable.
jadavix - 28 November 2022 More of the same - witty and self-referential, but pretty tedious besides The Scream series always set itself apart from other horror with its witty, self-referencing commentary on horror movies in general. Who could forget the "rules" that Jamie Kennedy's Randy Meeks described in the original movie?
Small wonder that 1996's "Scream" was the first horror movie of the '90s to really get people interested in horror movies again. Horror movies were light on the ground in the '90s in general, with only the diehards checking out the new Texas Chainsaw and Elm Street movies. In the '80s the slasher movie production machine went into overdrive and we were all feeling a bit burnt out by the time the '90s arrived. "Scream"'s self-knowledge was a breath of fresh air.
Happily, this "requel" - a term I learnt while watching the movie - doesn't shy away from that metafiction. It even references the fact that this version of "Scream" doesn't have a number in its title.
Aside from that, though, the "requel" doesn't have a whole lot going for it. Watching "Scream 4", which was no great shakes itself, I was at least given cause to remark on how few horror movies feature name actors. That one had Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin - all strong, distinctive talents. "Scream" the "requel" only really benefits from the talents of the series' stock company - none of the newcomers to the series make much of an impression.
In the original "Scream", some of the main characters were played by relative newcomers, and they all made an impression, especially Matthew Lillard as Stu, Jamie Kennedy as Randy Meeks (most people's favourite character from the whole series) and Rose McGowan as Tatum. Here, none of the actors who play the teenage group of friends stand out or have discernible personalities.
This is also the first Scream flick where I guessed the killer's identity within the first five minutes.
It's true that one of the regular cast dies this time around - I'm not going to tell you who - and it is later explained that this happened to give us the impression of "stakes" this time around. Their death was about the only surprise the movie had, though. I guess the problem is, as always with Hollywood, money. If we're to believe there's high stakes in one of the later sequels of a long-running slasher franchise, we need more than just one surprising death.
And when the identity of the killer(s) is revealed, it needs to be a big surprise.
m_imdb-944-37018 - 30 October 2022 Gets better It's a requel and doesn't shy away from the fact. The use of original characters is well done, not too much but enough for the original fans to enjoy.
Compared to other horror films this is very tame, but as a casual watch with some legacy nods it's a nice relaunch. The writers knew what they were doing and tired loose ends, and opened up some new threads in the process. I liked the nods to Jamie Lee and Wes Craven. Fun movie with easter eggs dotted around.
David, Courtney and Nev add links to the old movies but in no way detract from the new stories that play out. Take it for what it is and you'll enjoy it, compare to other horror movies and you may be left a little short.
moviebuffuser1973 - 14 October 2022 So meta it makes you cringe It's just so so so bad. Woeful.
It's so painfully aware (worse than The Matrix reboot) that you just cringe your way through. We literally laughed our way though the last ten minutes but I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be a comedy. Actors are all bang average including Hughie who's actually pretty decent in The Boys.
It's not a remake. It's not a sequel. It's so meta it actually discusses this exact fact halfway through the film whilst referencing other films that have tried and failed. How about you just use the premise and make something original.
Save your time. This will eventually be a 4.5 on iMDB max.
