aprilsfriendorin - 18 June 2024 Insanely slow movie I'm shocked by the number of positive reviews on here. Yeah, a 6 average isn't all that high, but it's definitely higher than this movie deserves. When I tell you it's slow.... Like holy crap, nothing happens for so long. I could get up, run a few laps around the block, get back, make myself dinner, sit back down, and I probably wouldn't have missed anything. I understand that some movies are "slow burns," but this one really puts the emphasis on slow....
If they cut down the run time or just made more things happen, it would've been a lot better. But apart from a few key scenes, there's really just not much going on.
aob_brctor87 - 1 April 2024 Maika Monroe is just marvelous in this tense, slow burn. This was a lot better than I was expecting. As these types of films are not really my thing. However this one takes the "Stalker" genre into a different direction.
A very slow and very tense one with a satisfying conclusion.
I watched this solely because Maika Monroe stars in it. I've loved her in "It Follows" and "The Guest" but she carries almost this entire film on her "paranoid/is she crazy" shoulders.
She's also stunningly beautiful.
Anyway the film follows her as she moves to Romania with her boyfriend, but doesn't speak the language.
This creates a ton of tension and dread not just for her but for the viewer as well (also no subtitles).
We feel just as confused as she does (unless you speak Romanian) at a few group gatherings with her boyfriend and his friends chatting up storms she doesn't understand...yet...
This movie could have gone a million different directions and I wasn't sure what was "actually" happening until the explosive ending.
I don't want to spoil anything else. It would be criminal. I'll close with this is more of a thriller than a horror film but does have some gruesome horror elements/gore in it.
If you have Shudder it's currently on there.
deesirius - 30 January 2024 My blood is boiling..... This movie is a slow burn and theres only real action in the last 10 minutes or so, however its only a 90 minute movie, which are my favourite type of movies, anything longer is always aggravating.
I gave this a passable rating simply because it was entertaining and i always enjoy a thriller/horror movie. However the reason i cant rate it any higher is simply because of the few tropes that get on my nerves!
Aggravating trope #1 : When the man/boyfriend/husband doesnt believe the protagonist, i would like to , FOR ONCE, just watch a movie where we dont have the idiot husband/bf be a dumba** gaslighting pos! Absolutely frustrating!
The finale hopefully teaches USELESS husband a lesson and if she survives, maybe she can leave his sorry excuse of a human being for someone who will believe her when she tells them shes being stalked (after knowing theres a SERIAL KILLER ON THE LOOSE IN THE SAME NEIGHBOURHOOD WHERE THEY LIVE!) cmon dude! Turns out, math and logic is an important skill to have in life!
Annoying trope #2 : The non translating of romanian was ABSOLUTELY frustrating, and look im not an idiot...i get that this was done on purpose for the viewers to also feel isolated like the main protagonist, but all it actually achieve was to distracted me further and wanting to find out what everyone was talking about...also, them having a full on conversation without clueing her in is so unrealistically rude, that it made me want to flip a table over....
All in all, this movie aggravated the hello outta me. But they managed to keep me hooked until the end.
griffithxjohnson - 27 December 2022 Minimally well crafted Slow paced & slightly underwhelming, but very well crafted to bring the fear of isolation to life. Genuinely creepy & great uses of misdirection. Good editing & surprisingly beautiful shots. But doesn't quite reach its potential.

theatomiccheesemelt - 9 November 2022 Boring Very very slow. No real twists. I decided to watch this because I read a review that compared it to Hitchcock's thriller/suspense movies, but it is far far from that. Both my wife and I thought it was an incredibly dull. The tension that they tried to build in the film never really happens till about he last five minutes of the movie and at that point neither of us really cared anymore. Not sure how this has the rating it does. Honestly it's about two stars. The acting is fine and the cinematography is good, but the films just not interesting nor are the characters. It also felt fairly predictable throughout. I strongly recommend not wasting your time.
hunter-85771 - 17 October 2022 Uneven This is a very ok watch. Maika Monroe was delightful at times though it feels like the film failed to make her
It's a good and scary concept. A stalker emerges for a US expat in Romania.
The film could have used about ten minutes less of run time. It dwells in moments that do not add to the tension and so much of it is her walking seemingly only to show off cute costume design. SLAY Maika
But here's what I loved: dynamic of an American struggling to acclimate in a foreign society, the creepy neighbors, the grit of Romania, the OUTSTANDING villain, and some of the beautiful and inventive shots like the one that precedes the title card
This is worth a watch but didn't leave me with much to take with me.
