Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday

Set over a day in 1924, the story follows Jane Fairchild, a maid in the Niven household, who has the day off to celebrate Mothering Sunday while Mr. and Mrs. Niven attend a lunch to celebrate the engagement of their neighbour’s only remaining son, Paul, to Emma Hobday. Jane rejoices at her freedom on an unseasonably hot, beautiful spring day. But, she has no mother to go to. For almost seven years she has – joyfully and without shame – been Paul’s lover. Like the Nivens, Paul belongs to England’s old money aristocracy, whereas Jane was orphaned at birth. With the house conveniently empty, they can finally meet in Paul’s bedroom for the first time. Today will be their last as lovers. It is also the day that will mark the beginning of Jane’s transformation as the story unfolds through the hours of clandestine passion.

    IF BORING WAS A FILM...
Mothering Sunday is the perfect choice to tuck oneself in bed. Boring, pretentious, shallow, a complete waste of time -- it's the "gem" insomniacs have longed for.

It's David Hamilton's Bilitis meets vapid French filmmaker Eva Husson.

An insipid and borderline soft porn flick one should imperatively avoid unless one suffers from sleep deprivation.

The acting is as flat as the Netherlands. Eva Husson has managed to turn very talented actors such as Colin Firth and Olivia Colman into rag dolls/zombies.

It's meant to collect dust This lame cinematic attempt is indeed "so terribly distressing..."

    A beautiful little movie
A beautiful little movie. Im astonished at the average rating; mind you many people also thought Truss was a good idea.

The casting and performances were excellent, especially Odessa! The script and performances made the most of the inherent deficiency in the story -- great build up though it had nowhere to go. And the token minority in the story was questionable.

Having said this, ultimately the story was about a maids journey in finding herself amidst the English upper class struggling with the aftermath of WW1.

Supporting roles all played well, and Colmans guidance to Odessa is wisdom that we might all relate to.

Superb acting in very refined sophisticated movie
Beautiful scenery, fantastic acting and a wonderful storytelling.

When all these great actors are put together to tell the story of Jane, you know there will be a lot you will love about this movie. The director made a choice to tell this story in different timelines, but with a great eye for details, for light, for close ups and it all is just wonderful.

I am a fan of Josh O'Connor and again he proved me why, he is excellent, charming when needed, dreamy and full of sorrow in a close up scene which took my breath away. Olivia and Colin each play a rather small part, but every line they speak is spot on and in Olivia's case especially the non spoken acting is simply phenomenal.

I saw that a lot of people rate this movie with just 1 star and it is simply ridiculous to be honest, when you love cinema, when you love attention to detail, when you love seeing brilliant actors it is simply not possible to give this just 1 star. Some people just are bullies really.

    Tedious
After 25 minutes of tedium I turned it off.

Up to that point everything had been painfully slow, including the creepy class sexploitation of those below stairs (soft porn may better describe it).
