Cyrano

A man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac dazzles whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne, Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her—and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian.

    Big disappointment!
As I have been reading Edmond Rostand's masterfully artful work, Cyrano de Bergerac, in my literature class, I've come to love and adore it. I've grown fond of Cyrano and Le Bret, and even Roxane (even if she is kind of foolish, she's sweet). I watched the 1950 film adaptation of Rostand's play, which is worth your time. I don't understand why Joe Wright couldn't have just made another adaptation of Rostand's play instead of making an adaptation of a play heavily inspired and/or based off of Rostand's work.

I have nothing against Dinklage; no, he's great and all, and his Cyrano is outstanding... but he is not very good at singing, unfortunately. And I thought that Cyrano was a man with a large (or long) nose! Again, nothing against Dinklage, but why change such an integral part of Rostand's work like that? I feel like Dinklage isn't playing Cyrano, but rather a character based off of him.

And listen--the movie itself doesn't suck. But I just want a faithful, "MODERN" adaptation. And when I say modern, I mean modern as in "crisp cameras and cinematography" and "outstanding sound quality and outfits." Not a modern take or outlook on the story. Just Rostand's story but with today's cameras and sound quality. Why is this so hard? Take some artistic liberties, yes, but STICK TO THE SCRIPT. It was written that way for a reason, people...

With all that in mind, an unfortunate 3 out of 10.

Beautiful film musical that takes a while to get going
"Cyrano" may take some time to find its feet but it is worth the wait. The second half has real emotional impact.

Casting Peter Dinklage is an inspired move - much better to have an actor whose stature defines Cyrano's torment, rather than sticking a big rubber nose on their face.

However although Dinklage is fantastic at delivering the spoken word (even when the words are a bit clunky), he's not such a good singer, falling into a "speak-singing" style. And that doesn't complement Haley Bennett's excellent performance as Roxanne, who sings her parts in a more traditional way. A few more sung notes would have given the songs more impact. The choreography can be very imaginitive though, like a seventeeth-century pop video.

    Recommended.

The legend of Cyrano reinvented to brilliance
This film is definitely one of the best films of the year, and a brilliant exploration and reimagining of the story of Cyrano.

And whilst I am yet to see the play, the music feels very authentic and befitting, all coreographed very thouroughly, and the actors all do an incredible job. Dinklage in particular is, as always, stellar - but one would expect nothing else.

Joe Wright is absolutely one of the better directors, as attested to by his numerous awards and rich filmography. And this is very likely his best film, or one of his best for sure.

Very beautifully put together overall, great cinematography, cutting and editing, stellar acting and sharp writing.

Recommended for any lover of film!

A little too on-the-nose for me
I had high hopes for Cyrano. I'm a big fan of the play, I think Peter Dinklage is a fantastic actor, and I enjoy musicals. However, this adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac missed the mark. Dinklage was really good during the dramatic moments, but whenever he began to sing, it just didn't work. In fact, I felt most of the songs in this film were lacking. The music was forgettable, and the lyrics were a little too on-the-nose (pun intended). I wanted to like this movie, but it kept stumbling over itself, and by the time it got to the end, I had all but checked out. It's a shame. It really is a great play.

    Warning, musical ahead
Like many others, I had no idea this was a musical (something I'm very picky about). I love Dinklage and appreciate his talent, but a singer he is not. Remove the weird "song" parts and he nailed his expressive performance. While visually sumptuous, I couldn't fully enjoy the beautiful sets and costumes with all the awkward singing and modern dance getting in the way (breakdancing soldiers during a love song... ugh). The tone was confusing with a mix of historical adherence and anachronistic elements, so while I wanted to enjoy this fully, I just couldn't dive in. Perhaps Baz Luhrmann should try remake. Thankfully I still have Steve Martin's "Roxanne."

    Unrequited love on display
I fell in love with this. I think the cragginess of Peter Dinklage's voice married with Haley Bennett's beautiful singing, conveys the pain of unrequited love. The acting is suburb. You can feel the pain in the voices singing during the balcony scene. They each convey what it feels like when you want someone so much that it hurts. And the pain is felt again as Cyrano and Roxanne declare their love for one another, albeit too late. Poor Cyrano goes through life believing that he is not good enough for love, especially from Roxanne.

I have always loved the novel and play. And now I love the movie too.

    Size does not matter
No pun intended - I am talking about two indivuals that love each other. And that it should not matter if they can see eye to eye ... while standing (tall) ... sorry, I know, another pun. I can't help myself. It is like Cyrano here - he can't help himself falling ... in love and head over heels .. and on his nose and back.

All kidding aside, the movie is well told, I did not expect as much music and singing as was going on to be honest. But it didn't bother me too much either. Very well played by all involved and a story many can empathize with. Loving someone and them not knowing about it ... maybe even loving someone else. A story that has been told many times. Still and even though this is quite predictable it is fun to watch - just go for the ride and enjoy this.
