A Movie with a lot of issues but with a lot of positives
I don't get all the hate this one got I was never a fan of the original or just exorcism films in general but I didn't mind this at all. Of course it's definitely got negatives that goes without saying I.e. Ann Dowd character and acting is pretty much lifeless, I don't understand why they shoehorned in Ellen Burstyn's character, Ellen Burstyn's was like I was cardboard speaking to people some of the writing was like it was done by an amateur, I really don't get why the characters were speaking over each other for basically the whole of the runtime of the movie but the ideas was certainly there (the execution of some was definitely there) the rest of the acting was good, the camera work was great, old fashioned jump scares that weren't a loud boom was appreciated. This was a decent movie just be prepared for a movie with a ton of issues but great positives.

    Not good
Having seen most of the various films based around exorcism over the years I guess I have a lot to compare any new releases to. The original exorcist of course being the best with a sliding scale of various other entries.

This one ranks near the bottom. As per usual two young girls mess about with some black magic type stuff they shouldn't be though you aren't really shown what and go missing for a few days. When they show up suddenly in kind of dazed state it quickly becomes clear that something has happened to them and they are not quite right.

They have of course been possessed and sort of out of nowhere someone suggests that one of the girls fathers speak to Ellen Burstyn from the original exorcist who is of course Regans mother in the original. She is about 90 now but is in good shape for her age. That said there was no point in her character being in this one other than to provide some link to the original. If she hadn't been in the film it wouldn't have progressed any differently.

They decide a sort of exorcism is needed and of course the priest can't get approval from the church to take part. But no worry because they have a sort of voodoo practitioner, an evangelical type preacher and a woman who almost became a nun to get it going. Eye rolls all round. The acting is hammy in places and I don't think it had much of a budget. It's not clear what I'd even going on during the 'exorcism' and exchanges with the possessed are confusing and hard to follow.

A pretty bad entry to exorcism series. Nothing like as bad as the exorcist part II of course but that's not saying much given that that movie might be the worst sequel in history. I'd give this one 4/10 which might even be a bit generous.

    A ridiculous mess.
This sad attempt at cashing in on Friedkin's genre bending film has absolutely nothing in common with the original, despite a two second appearance by Linda Blair and a five minute one by Ellen Burstyn.

What is so disappointing is that it could have quite good given its clever use of a version, of sorts, of Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' if only in a trance version and the odd interesting line or two. But this is no horror film. It's as lame as a cold pork pie.

The build up (to nothing) takes up the first hour. From there it's all downhill. The final scene is unintentionally hilarious.

Gone is the sense of atmosphere and terror of the original movie...this is strictly a paint by numbers number.

Cheap sets, lousy script and ordinary photography. The acting is so over the top it's almost unbearable to sit through.

This isn't even a 'B' grade film. It's more a lousy Lifetime Channel anfternoon offering with a bucket of raspberry cordial tossed around the set to indicate blood. What is really lacking is the Pea Soup.

If anyone wants to attempt an homage to 'The Exorcist' simply do a better, updated version of the original. Same story, modernised script, vastly improved special effects Now that I'd pay to see!
