C0lestar - 17 February 2024 This is what musicals should be Oh my Gosh,I love this movie so much, such a beautiful adaptation of the beloved Broadway show and loved to see Christopher Jackson and Lin-Manuel Miranda have cameos in this version! I loved Lin SO much as Usnavi but I think Anthony Ramos did a great job too! The emotion and love in this whole thing is really moving and inspirational (like Hamilton)A MUST SEE. From the beautiful visual aspects of this film to the just beauty of the casts' voice all together make this movie one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life and that isn't even exaggeration! I don't understand why people don't like this movie!
atlasmb - 3 April 2023 A Latin Fiesta Of Song Part of this adaptation of the Broadway musical uses a rap narrative which is, fortunately, not over-done. But it really soars when lyrical music is used. Because Washington Heights is a fusion of Caribbean and southern American influences, the music and dance reflect that. The choreography is good, though it heavily relies on a (flash) mob style of dance.
The story is told from the perspective of Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who owns the bodega but wants to recapture his childhood dreams of the Dominican Republic by returning to the island. All of the characters harbor various dreams, especially dreams of financial success or success for their progeny, both of which fall under the umbrella of the American Dream.
The performers are talented. The two that I appreciated most were Jimmy Smits, who plays a local business owner, and Olga Merediz, who portrays Abuela Claudia, who might be called the matriarch of the neighborhood. Merediz lights up the screen whenever she appears.
The production includes some special effects, which were unexpected. The most enchanting moment of the film is when two lovers commemorate the end of their summer with a surprisingly orchestrated dance sequence.
When a blackout comes, the denizens adjust to the summer heat in various ways, but struggle to maintain their energy. However, a solution is found and the film has a good ending.
liamgg-26681 - 6 June 2022 Incredibly Underrated Gem Of A Film In The Heights is an extremely underrated and overlooked movie that soars in emotion, character and joy. Lin-Manuel Miranda's unstoppable soundtrack plus a cast of intriguing characters makes for a phenomenal summer musical that is not to be missed.
magiulietta - 8 February 2022 A feast for the senses The music is a unique combination of latino sound with hip-hop and typical 'musical' genre- amazing music with humorous, emotional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The music accompanies some real quality acting skills of the cast, beautiful, colorful, satisfying visuals and thoughtful hearfelt directing from Jon M. Chu.
This film radiates positive energy, it makes the audience want to sing and dance. It makes anyone feel powerful.
