Hands down one of the best releases of 2024 in this genre
I rarely write reviews but I was so fascinated by this one that I can't stop myself. I could feel my heart beating rapidly at the end of the movie. I have watched so many horror movies but this one is definitely my top one for this year. As someone already mentioned in the reviews, a movie like this has come out after a long time. No boring storyline or endless drag or a long ass introduction of the characters, it gets straight into the creepy stuff right from the beginning. The tension and the build up during the storyline keeps you wide awake throughout and waiting for what's next. Sam Raimi has indeed done a wonderful job!

    The worst movie ever
"Evil Dead Rise" (2023) is a disheartening disappointment, a movie that disastrously fumbles the legacy of a beloved horror franchise. As a long-time fan of the "Evil Dead" series, I entered the theater with cautious optimism, hoping that this latest installment would honor the grotesque, gory charm of its predecessors. Unfortunately, "Evil Dead Rise" proved to be one of the worst cinematic experiences I have endured in recent years, and here's why.

First and foremost, the plot is a tangled mess, devoid of coherence and continuity. The storyline supposedly shifts the action to a high-rise apartment building, an interesting premise that could have revitalized the series. However, the execution is abysmal. The narrative is riddled with clichés and predictable twists, offering nothing new or intriguing. The script lacks originality and depth, making the film feel like a hastily assembled collection of recycled horror tropes. The characters are poorly developed, each more two-dimensional than the last. We are given no reason to care about their fates, which renders their eventual demises meaningless and unimpactful.

The dialogue is cringe-worthy, filled with awkward lines that sound like they were pulled from a teenager's first attempt at horror writing. Instead of the sharp, dark humor that characterized the earlier films, we are subjected to insipid, uninspired exchanges that fall flat at every turn. The lack of wit and creativity in the dialogue is painfully evident, making scenes that should be tense or terrifying instead laughably bad.

Visually, "Evil Dead Rise" is a catastrophe. The special effects, which should be a highlight in a horror movie of this caliber, are shockingly subpar. The CGI is glaringly artificial, stripping away any sense of realism or immersion. Practical effects, a staple of the original films, are sorely missed here. The gore, which should be a revolting delight for fans of the genre, is instead cartoonish and unconvincing. It's as if the filmmakers attempted to create a parody of horror rather than a genuine addition to the "Evil Dead" series.

Moreover, the film's pacing is excruciatingly slow. Scenes drag on without purpose, leading to a sense of frustration and boredom. There is a distinct lack of suspense, with the movie relying on cheap jump scares rather than building genuine tension. The atmosphere, which should be oppressive and chilling, is instead dull and lifeless. Even the sound design, an essential component of any horror film, is lackluster. The soundtrack is forgettable, and the sound effects are generic and unimpressive.

The direction and cinematography are equally uninspired. The film lacks the visual flair and creativity that made the original "Evil Dead" movies stand out. The camera work is pedestrian, with none of the inventive angles or dynamic movement that could have added a layer of excitement to the viewing experience. Instead, we are left with a series of static, unimaginative shots that do nothing to elevate the material.

The cast, while not entirely at fault given the poor script, delivers lackluster performances. It's evident that they are trying to do their best with what they've been given, but the material is simply too weak to support any truly compelling acting. The emotional beats are forced and unconvincing, leaving the audience disengaged and uninterested.

"Evil Dead Rise" fails on almost every level. It disrespects the legacy of its predecessors, offering a hollow, uninspired imitation rather than a worthy continuation. The film lacks the heart, humor, and horror that made the original movies iconic. Instead, it delivers a bland, forgettable experience that will likely be remembered only for how profoundly it disappointed fans of the franchise. In a world where horror has seen a resurgence of creativity and innovation, "Evil Dead Rise" stands as a stark reminder of how wrong things can go when a film lacks vision, passion, and respect for its source material. Save yourself the time and disappointment; this is one horror movie that is better left unseen.

    No
If you like gore-y slashers with basically no story and foolish characters, this film is for you. This was very underwhelming and predictable. You could tell what was going to happen from start to finish. This plot is overly-done, and all the excessive and unnecessary gore made it very boring to watch, and failed to make up for the weakness of the storyline. Sometimes, with the right music and the right color schemes, the atmosphere was actually scary, but this movie was a failure. It's alright to watch with company, or at the cinema (mainly because it makes the movie more chilly), but this is definitely not a must-watch. The actors' performances weren't bad at all, and i think they did all they could for a poor plot like this. They definitely made the film more tolerable. Overall, this is a movie you watch and immediately forget, so don't waste your time.

Not bad, as far as the modern horror genre is concerned.
I know a lot of people were disappointed by this film, but it's better executed than its 2013 predecessor by Fede Alvarez, which consisted almost entirely of shaky handheld closeups and had zero concept of what makes a film actually interesting, even a cheap and dirty horror film that isn't meant to be some kind of classic. In the context its contemporaries, this one is above average.

At the very least, I wasn't bored to tears by this like most other modern horror. This seems very polished by comparison, has technical competency in its execution, with effective pacing and a variety of shot styles and creative camera work. The music score is also effectively utilized and matches very well to the timing of what's on the screen.

And (gasp) was that even a little bit of a character arc in the protagonist too? In a modern horror film? Do people even know what that is anymore? Someone get me my fainting chair.

I dunno, I've seen way worse from this genre in recent years, and this really was punching above its weight compared to most. Feels like it proudly wore its inspirational elements of slasher/grindhouse films of the 1970s and 1980s, or cosmic/gothic horror films of the 1990s like Event Horizon (which it feels very evocative of) if you're into that sort of thing.
