smishyb - 8 June 2024 Fresh Indeed! I saw that this was a Hulu Original and passed over it a few times, but after seeing the ratings, I decided to take the plunge and I'm not sorry.
We've got a less intelligent version of Dr. Lector who can't keep his "unique" tastes to himself and instead, starts a lucrative and eventual thriving business.
Our main character keeps you guessing with her perplexing actions and you find yourself wondering if she is the next favorite/wife. I won't lie- I worried about the ending but it did not disappoint. Call me uncultured but I still like a good comeback with some solid revenge thrown in and a palatable outcome for the protagonist. With this movie, you get all the sick, demented goodness of low-key slasher with an ending that will allow you to sleep soundly. I loved this movie.
reed-54805 - 15 March 2024 Disappointingly Flawed: Fresh Fails to Deliver Fresh may have garnered praise, but it falls short of expectations, plagued by numerous loopholes and an illogical screenplay. Let's address the glaring inconsistencies:
Firstly, Mollie's failure to file a missing person report for Noa is bewildering and undermines the story's credibility. Her decision to not involve the police when confronting danger at Brendan's house is equally baffling.
Additionally, the characters' actions lack rationality. Noa's failure to defend herself with a fork during dinner with Brendan/Steve is inexplicable. In the climactic kitchen scene, the decision to spare Brendan/Steve's life instead of eliminating the threat is nonsensical and drains the tension. (They could kill him with a big knife, yaa???)
Fresh wastes its potential with a flawed narrative and questionable character choices.
IT'S AN OVERRATED DISAPPOINTMENt, making it a total waste of time for viewers.
andypalang - 4 March 2024 A Unique Entry In The Horror Genre Director Mimi Cave provides a dark storyline with Fresh as it tells the story of a woman named Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), whose world changes as she meets and develops chemistry with a man named Steve (Sebastian Stan).
I thought that the tiny details that are placed throughout the film help provide a great delivery of the story within the movie. Mimi Cave foreshadows the horror that is to come as she gives low-key lighting at the beginning of the film while Noa gets to know Steve, hinting that Steve is hiding something and is not being completely honest with her. I also enjoyed how tension was further built up as the scenes are primarily filled by shadows as they arrive in Steve's cabin and the placement of the title/intro of the film 33 minutes in tells the audience of the shift in the tone that is taking place. Additionally, I thought that the contrast between the dancing/uplifting music that accompanies the horrific action of Steve slicing, flattening, and preparing a leg for delivery creates an uncommon, yet effective scene to make the audience uncomfortable as it portrays this action as something that is routine and normal for Steve.
Despite the absence of traditionally frightening scenes typically seen in horror films, Fresh provides dread in that it touches up on horror that is a possibility in everyday life as the monster in the film is a human that understood how to act and seem normal in society. Overall, I would say that it was a great movie that provides a unique and captivating story to its audience.
frank-71651 - 1 January 2023 Tastefully twisted Having read next to nothing about Fresh apart from its genre tags, I didn't really know what kind of movie I was getting into, and that made the whole watching experience rather pleasantly surprising, dare I say almost... (you know the word). A commentary on the dangers of random hook-ups, dating and female empowerment, the movie's message may be too on-the-nose, but it makes for a small, entertaining movie. Sebastian Stan's villainous turn is a delight to watch, and you can almost see a burning urge to get rid of the thirst of his female admirerers that his past Marvel movies have brought him (though I suspect even this performance will attract a new, very kinky audience). His character is alternately seductive, dead serious, terrifying, pathetic and hilarious - and frequently all at once. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won't mention the obvious character inspirations here, and I doubt Stan will reach similar iconic status with this one. That's in part due to the supporting cast, none of which besides the main female lead are all that fleshed out or interesting. Two tonally different but wildly enjoyable acts also give way to a fairly generic climax where the whole thing almost falls apart thanks to its efforts to please impatient genre enthusiasts. But even with its botched conclusion, Fresh is a movie worth taking your partner to see - just make sure it's not on your first date.
FixedYourEnding - 17 November 2022 Hard to watch... for multiple reasons Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is looking for love, and when she anything but given up on dating apps, she magically finds Steve (Sebastian Stan) as prince charming at a random (?) encounter in a grocery store. Too good to be true? It is.
It could easily be a pretty good rom-com, but it takes a sharp turn at about 30 minutes in, when the intro credits finally appear. To be honest, I might enjoyed the movie more if it was a smart rom-com. The supporting role of Mollie (Jojo T. Gibbs) is an interesting one and overall the acting is above average for a low-budget film like this and the actors are doing the best with what they are given.. which is not much.
-- Spoiler warning --
I didn't find the story very realistic and I am always annoyed by the 'calm manner' of both the capture and the victim. When you are in life or death situation you will behave much differently and you will execute a much better escape attempt, especially when you are not tightly held 90% of the time. The point about cannibalism also did not speak well to me, maybe it's just me but it was just gross. Not scary or thrilling, just plain gross and I did not enjoy that at all.
Towards the end of the movie it really seem that's where the creativity and budget ran out. The escape scene at the end is ridiculous and it's just all over the place. Describing this as a comedy is bluntly incorrect, it is also not really a horror movie, it's a creation that is different in the attempt to be different, I think the technical term for that is "Meh".
Overall I think the ratings on IMDB is way too high, driven by artistic reviews rather than an average Joe rating, so if you are not a 'movie connoisseur' I suggest you skip this one. Exact score: 48 / 100.
d_penn - 23 October 2022 It's not our fault, Noa, it's always there's This film was truly a work of art from Sebastian Stan as Steve and Daisy Edgar Jones as Noa the level of intense scenes and the chaotic mess this went in truly made the film feel more of what Thriller is felt like. Like throughout the whole plot my mind was blown away, if you are a fan of Sebastian Stan you instant understand the real measurements he took when he was doing his research to play this particular film. I feel like a lot of people misunderstand that when Sebastian does a role he'll go into more depths of how much research he did, how he became a character, and how much experience he had from learning things from the director which I must say the way this film was filmed like ah chef's kiss it was so good, you feel every level of emotion just from the way it was filmed. I absolutely love this film, if you love the feeling of intense and feeling like you are on the edge of your seat this movie is exactly what you are looking for! Best cast and amazing director! 7.8/10.
julnrossy - 2 September 2022 JUST PLAIN SICK This was totally GROSSED OUT! Certainly didn't expect to see this kind of crap on Disney Plus. After cutting off her ARSE, I just couldn't be bothered watching this crap anymore. Looks like a rehash of something from the 80's. Like Turkey Shoot, ugh. I'd rather watch American Horror Story and even if that was a bit gross in parts. I will say that it was weird and different and gory in parts, but it had some grit and it made a bit of sense at the end of the seasons when you put it all together. But this was just pure Vile.
I can't fathom why this was classed as comedy horror as it was not.
