Persuasion

Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. Delightful remake and update
As someone else stated, not for Jane Austen purists, but I'm so glad to see Hollywood upgrading older films with modern actors and thought processes. A softly intellectual and fun production. It is filled with understated humor and dialog; colorful characters who are very believable. I laughed and giggled at the insufferable conversations, and then loved the characters even more. Appreciate the latitude the writers took with the dialog, and how the actors brought it to the screen. I also appreciate the excellent casting. Regardless of some of the disparaging reviews, I believe this film is well worth the viewing!

    Jane Austin fans, beware.
"Persuasion" (2022) has managed to do something for me that I never thought was possible...it made me dislike a Jane Austin movie. Up until now, I never could have imagined such a thing, as I love her work and have read all her novels and try to watch all the movies. But this new version is lacking in so many ways and shows a complete disregard by the filmmakers of what the film SHOULD have been.

As I watched this story with my aunt, the two of us were both unpleasantly surprised that the film was poor. One of the reasons is the casting. Why cast an American actress in the lead? Why make a large number of the cast members black or Asian when in early 19th century Britain you would have only rarely seen people who were ethnic...and, for the most part, they would NOT have been welcomed by the rich nobility which would have been VERY class-conscious. This isn't me being mean...this is just the reality of the day and since I used to teach history, I knew the film was more interested in political correctness than realism. Now, had the film been set in modern times and not been about the elites of Britain, I would welcome lots of folks of many different races, religions, etcetera. What also didn't make sense, historically speaking, was the language and way the characters acted and interacted. It seemed much more like a contemporary drama than a Georgian period piece. All this is VERY odd and distracting...especially as the plot itself DOES stick pretty closely to the Austin novel!

Another problem was the odd choice of having the main character periodically face the camera and talk to the audience. This NEVER was the case with any of the Austin stories and it just didn't fit.

The bottom line is that if you love Jane Austin, don't see the film. If you haven't and don't mind the many changes and mistakes, by all means give it a try.

I can't help but wonder if either the filmmakers were woefully ignorant or they just didn't care to get the story right. Either way, it's a real shame and they should have done their research.

Jane Austen would love this adaptation!
As a lifelong Austen fan I feel confident saying that as a female author ahead of her time, Jane Austen would love this version of Persuasion! It is witty charming with great performances by most of the actors.

Breaking the 4th wall in the movie lends itself to the writing style of Austen in Persuasion using the narrator to speak for the main character, Anne Elliot.

Modernizing the film version of the novel by using slang such as "he's a 10" is exactly what makes me think Ms Austen would be thrilled with this film version made in 2022.

Dakota Johnson's subtle glances and winks to the cameras capture the character's essence perfectly.

    It's totally horrible
I'm a big Jane Austen fan of the novels and I generally think movie adaptations much inferior to the original book but this one is just awful. I watched the trailer when it came out and I immediately knew it was not going to be good. However, I still watched the movie and it was even worse than my expectations. The movie is more to appeal to modern audiences which makes it not at all faithful to the novel. It also sort of has that forced diversity that is terribly unrealistic. If you want to make a movie to appeal to a person seeking for a modern movie, just make a modern adaptation of it and not make the characters wear period costume but say modern stuff.

Additionally, Anne is not like Emma or Elizabeth, which obviously modern audiences like more than quiet characters like Fanny Price or Anne. Can't people just appreciate that not all heriones need to be witty and vivacious.

This feels like sort of copying Emma 2020 and building of people watching Bridgerton. I have lots of complains against Bridgerton too but this isn't the place to say them. Persuasion the novel is not like Bridgertion or Emma.

LOOSELY based on Jane Austen's book Persuasion!!
The movie "Persuasion" is LOOSELY based on Jane Austen's book, and I think that's what the public doesn't understand and expected a faithful version of the book. For me who has not read Austen's work, the movie was more of a romantic drama with poor performances from the cast.

The movie directed by Carrie Cracknell seems like a high school play in the first half hour but it improves a little in the second half, partly by the sensibility of Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot. The soundtrack is nice, well chosen and helps the plot This is a movie that fits precisely into the Hallmark channel schedule.

Slow, painfully slow and boring .. nothing could save this film not even the cast
The movie starts with some form of potential then proceeds so slowly and boringly it was painful to finish it. I found myself fast forwarding at some point just to get to the end.

It didn't even capture the mood of the period or the 'Britishness' of the characters despite lavish sets and costumes .. and a star studded cast that tried to deliver but completely unrealistically. Almost felt like a play then a movie.

I only gave it a three because of the acting of Ms. Johnson and Mr. Richard Grant. The rest of the cast was probably misdirected as their acting was very B grade

    huge disappointment...
