Falko_h1 - 30 May 2024 A fun yet formulaic treasure hunt "Uncharted," directed by Ruben Fleischer, is a cinematic adaptation of the popular video game series, starring Tom Holland as the young and adventurous Nathan Drake. The movie follows Drake's quest to find a legendary treasure, partnering with the seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg.
The film delivers on action and spectacle, featuring thrilling chase sequences and elaborate set pieces reminiscent of the game's spirit. Tom Holland brings a youthful energy to Nathan Drake, while Mark Wahlberg's Sully adds a touch of humor and charisma. Their chemistry is a highlight, providing some entertaining banter throughout the movie.
However, "Uncharted" struggles with a predictable plot and underdeveloped characters. The storyline follows a familiar treasure-hunt formula without introducing many new twists or surprises. Fans of the video game may appreciate the nods to the original material, but the film lacks the depth and complexity that made the games so beloved.
Overall, "Uncharted" is a fun, if somewhat formulaic, adventure that offers a decent mix of action and humor but doesn't quite reach the heights of its source material.
crossnation - 30 March 2024 Not great, but still fun I benefit from having never played the video game for which this is based off of. Therefore, I came to it with zero expectations.
The plot centers on a young bartender and con artist named Nathan Drake, who wants to find an amazing treasure that his long lost older brother was trying to locate years earlier.
He gets set on his journey with the help of a shady older character named Victor Sullivan, who once worked with Nathan's brother on trying to find the treasure. On their adventure, they encounter another professional thief named Chloe Frazer, all while being pursued by some one dimensional bad guys with a lot of resources.
If you are looking for complex characters, a faithful adaptation of the beloved video game franchise, or large-scale action sequences grounded in reality, don't watch this movie. You will be disappointed.
However, if you just want to watch a fun little over the top adventure story with twists and turns, characters who can't be trusted, and crazy action sequences, then this should be a nice diversion.
Chris_Ego - 20 February 2024 it's so bad I had to write a review to warn the world! I knew this is gonna bad. But it was even worse than expected. What a lame production. UNCHARTED (2022) is a video game adaptation and yet tries so hard to be as adventurous as Indiana Jones, as hot as Tomb Raider and as exciting as The Da Vinci Code. However it fails in every department. The action sequences could work in the computer game as rendered cut scenes. But wouldn't it be desirable to make the movie more realistic? Lead Spiderman guy is annoying almost all the time. Marky Mark plays himself (as usual) but gets away with it. Sexy sidekicks and villains steal the show. Story is okay but gets uncharted (pun intended!) when the action kicks in. Wait until the helicopters arrive! My jaw was wide open when I realised the insane stupidity of this presentation. By the end of the movie the production team tried so hard to beg for a sequel with cheap tricks like 2 post credits scenes and many hints for the next adventure to come.
My taste in films was seriously insulted by this feauture. If I would've watched it in cinema I'd want my money back.
T-ZER0 - 1 January 2023 The Ballad of Magellan Firstly, I want to start by saying something that most reviewers are unaware of when they give this movie positive reviews. IT'S BASED OFF A VIDEO GAME! No, it's not a generic action movie. It's based off the Uncharted PlayStation video games. With that being said. I saw this movie and did not like it, while I was bored during the film, I purchased the Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection on PS4 as I wanted to experience Uncharted for what it really was.
I played most of the games and I noticed one thing. This is a terrible video game adaptation. Can Hollywood never get these movies right?? Firstly, the casting. Tom Holland as Nathan Drake? Seriously? The guy looks nothing like Nathan Drake, and don't try to defend saying that he's supposed to be the younger version you saw in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, because they don't look alike for one, and two, this one in the movie is supposed to be an adult!!!! The character of Drake is wrong as well, he acts like this insecure kid when on the video games he was nothing like that.
Let's not forget Sully. Mark Wahlberg as Sully? What were they thinking? He doesn't look or sound like Sully, and that mustache doesn't fix it in the end credits scene! Gone are the characters from the games like Elena, Chloe is in this movie. I have to admit, the actress who plays her looks closest to the video game counterpart. More than Tom Holland ever could.
Antonion Banderas is in this film, until he's replaced with Tati Gabrielle as the main villain. Honestly Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) is not a good villain. She's a whiny wannabe antagonist. I don't recall Sully ever having a past with someone named Braddock in the games! The hunting for the treasure in this movie is basic blue's clues logic. Even if you took this a generic adventure movie, it needs to have something to make it stand out among the others. I'll give examples: Indiana Jones captivated us because of the mystery, action and fun, National Treasure gave us a new look at history which was fun and enjoyable to watch. Uncharted (THE VIDEO GAMES) gave us cool locations, engaging story and was very cinematic for a video game.
Uncharted the movie? Well, it's got Papa John's? That's the only thing it has going for it. The main treasure in this film is from the expedition of Magellan. Honestly, when I was watching this I expected Magellan from Animaniacs to appear at least to make this movie watchable. Let's also not forget, Nathan Drake does not use a gun hardly in the film, when 80% of the time you do that in the video games.
So, Uncharted is a terrible video game movie, place it on your bad video game movie trash bin next to Super Mario Bros. (1993) and Street Fighter (1994). Unfortunately for us, Sony CEO said that Uncharted is now a franchise and sequels are expected. That means they are going to make at least 3 more of these things with the same cast. God help us all...
chanellejholder - 26 December 2022 No Layer or Depth A viewer should always feel like a movie is worth investing into. And that's not just for the actors. We need to fall in love with the characters and the plot and feel like the lead could be our best friend. I wouldn't even call the leads an acquaintance. Someone I glaced at across the street would give me even more than these lead characters are giving me. I'm so bored I regret having pressed play. And I've been going back and forth on pressing play for months now, because deep down I knew this was coming. Just from the look of the trailer I could tell this was going to be a let down. And truly all this movie did was take the highlights of classic adventure films and compile them into a movie. And because of this we don't get the "boring" parts of adventure films- the parts that make us want to watch the movie.
lahcomp - 27 November 2022 Poor. Good cast let down by awful script & cliched plotting What a shame to see good actors let down by terrrible screen writing. Dialogue is cheesy, and cringeworthy. Apart from Holland's, the characters are unlikeable & shallow. The action is, especially in the final scenes, so badly plotted & unbelievable as to be annoying.
This is a poor relation of treasure hunting films with weak research giving absurd, unsupported action in the hunt sequences, and crass lack of insight in treatment of relics. It's a poor stab at copying the Indiana Jones genre, but lazy research, poor plotting & terrible writing lets it down. Cliched dialogue, cliched characters, and cliched stunts make it painful to watch. Were the script writers 12? The lack of experience, or perhaps lack of care, makes this seem like they're trying to fleece the audience with some glitzy scenes and big name actors. Nobody can carry this weak script though.
Holland and Wahlberg try hard with poor material, but even their performances and great scenery can't lift this. It's a couple of hours of your life you'll never get back again. Do something else.
FallenEye - 14 November 2022 Charts Mid as it Charts a Course. Though Tom Holland at first felt a lot like Peter Parker, I did feel that resemblance fade away as the movie continued, which I appreciated, because there was a huge risk that Tom was simply going to play the same character in a different movie, like some recent stars who have reached A-list status are currently doing. Mark Wahlberg also gave a decent performance, while at points he was in fact, rather good, and the chemistry between Tom and Mark proved to be quite an entertaining concoction. The score ranged from okay to satisfactory, and managed to provide a noticeable contribution towards the enjoyment of the movie.
Unfortunately however, choppy editing, some generic action, cartoonishly outlandish sequences, and one too many instances of extreme coincidence, that make continual appearances throughout the movie hurt Uncharted enough to really affect its quality, which impacted the movie negatively the further along it went.
That said, all in all the movie is entertaining, and Tom does display some real charisma while flamboyantly flaunting his athleticism, but this film had the potential to be exciting and thrilling, and just couldn't quite manage to reach such heights, even with its heightened ships in a battle royale, though the creativity, and attempt thereof, is worth appreciating, making Uncharted a movie that is enjoyable, and one that may have laid some acceptable ground work and charted a course as it were, towards being a franchise with the potential to be, more... Though it likely won't.
6.4/10.
P. S. Even though I'm not an avid player of the game, I am still inclined however, to believe all those who say that the essence of the game, including its characters, was mutilated, because that is a Sony and Hollywood modus operandi , and thus sympathize and understand their dislike for this movie.
Beserkerdude - 2 November 2022 Didnt expect much, want disappointed I understand it is a movie and there must be some suspension of disbelief , but his was way beyond that. How did they get the 2 intact ships in that cave? How did a helicopter lift the ship.
The casting was odd, Holland is a good actor, has some charisma but was a poor choice here, he is the size of a hobbit. Hard to take him seriously in this role. The women were unattractive and unbelievable, there was no chemistry with male leads. But hey they ticked diversity boxes and apparently that matters more than a good fit. Selena Gomez would have been better and more age appropriate for Holland, the actress playing Chloe looked at least 15 years too old for him.
The action was well done, and lot was decent, just felt , wow glad I didnt see in theaters and saw for free on a flight.
