Blazehgehg - 10 November 2023 Good enough This is a movie about Halloween decorations come to life, and that's pretty much where most of the fun is. Thankfully, the movie kind of knows this, and there's no shortage of weird gags about 8 foot tall grim reapers, animatronic zombies, and rubber spiders.
The actual story between the Halloween action scenes are... I don't want to say it's bad, but it's incredibly simple, predictable, and over-acted. A lot of the time this feels like a high-budget version of one of those old Disney Channel Original Movies, except now they can also swear sometimes. It's a strange vibe. Very cheesy, very one dimensional, almost cutesy at times, but then a decoration brandishes a fire axe and they play it for real danger.
Some of this just feels like it's due to Marlon Wayans. His brand of slapstick is all over this movie, and they even give him a "Homey don't play that" line.
It feels like the kind of movie I'd probably utterly fall in love with if I was 14 years old. This mixture of corny and serious is perfect for Halloween, and it's what made movies like Hocus Pocus and Ernest Scared Stupid so memorable. I don't know if this quite hits those highs, but... well, I'm also not 14 years old anymore.
Still, even so, it's fun enough.
Crunchy801 - 26 September 2023 For kids 8-14 The movie is good for kids in middle school, not sure if older kids will like it as much. You could probably watch with a preteen in case they get spooked. The movie is fine. Good vibes, mildly scary, and enjoyable. The father character is very unreasonable throughout the movie so it feels like the movie keeps halting every time he complains, however the character is still fun when he doesn't. He shines bright by the end of the movie. Character interactions are fun but I wish everyone's IQ was raised +10.
The movie is an obvious love letter to the 90s. The various monsters the characters encountered were all fun and felt like a nod to Jumanji. They are all of varying degrees of scary but the Klowns stole the show for me. Can't decide if the movie is a 5 or 6 out of 10.
kosmasp - 8 November 2022 Scary entertaining No pun intended and meant as I wrote it. I guess you can be surprised by how entertaining this was. Shocked in a sense? Yes I reckon you could say that - I did not expect to like this as much as I did. And yes I reckon I am known to rate a bit too loose or high ... maybe that is the case here too. Maybe a 6 would have sufficed too ... but here we go, that is me.
I mean with a cast like this ... and I do not mean the main character (though for anyone who is into White chicks - the movie and no pun intended - they will love him), but all the other characters who are cast quite interestingly to say the least.
Then there are the really good effects the movie has ... and the mixture between comedy and horror ... well they do work. I know, I am as surprised by this as you are ... or maybe my expectations were so low, I did not mind Marlon Wayans doing his usual thing ... if you think it is annoying ... maybe you'll have some issues liking this at all ... but just go with the flow ... it will be better that way (the viewing experience that is)
teezeecee - 31 October 2022 Easy watching As a nearly 30yo woman, I watched this in my own and quite enjoyed it. The acting was questionable but it's an easy watch and the storyline wasn't half bad.
I'm not sure I'd rave about it, but I am pleased I watched it. It has a similar vibe to Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy.
I also like that's it as normal film length, it's not 4 hours it's only an hour and a half so you can just pop it on.
The CGI wasn't great but then it adds to the charm of the movie I think. Kind of feels like it should have been released back in the late 90s early 00s, but I think if you don't fancy yourself a film critic and you can just enjoy simple things then definitely watch it.
itakethesquare - 23 October 2022 Has to have the "message" and "checklist" even in kids movies Just like Hocus Pocus 2, you can completely take this off the list for things to let your kid watch on Halloween. It's got dumb wokism like everything else nowadays. It's not the actors fault. I like Wayans and crew but stick to Nightmare before Christmas or anything Burton before watching this.
The only reason to have a Netflix account nowadays is to watch Stranger Things or a rare expensive drop like Dahmer, Squid Game, etc. The older movies are what I end up browsing through. Originals like these are not worth the expensive monthly subscription, or they're terms of who and how many can watch on your account.
