maccorvus - 18 May 2024 Alligator with cigarette Hi, I created an account just to review this film. A lot of people in the reviews are comparing this movie to "Crawl" when they're not quite that similar. Aside from the plot-line of big storm to alligator pipeline there's a lot of differences you can find. "Crawl", for one, had pretty decent cgi effects.
Putting aside the blatant horrible consistently blurry alligators that barely look like alligators, the horribly inconsistent lighting, and the repeated mentions of a huge storm that never seems to have any real impact on the story aside from an easy way to flood the place, this movie isn't all that bad. It truly does have its moments that really make this film shine.
For instance, towards the very end of the film (1:19:00-ish), there is a scene with the main protagonist (sheriff Newman) that is broken up by two other characters (Russel Cody and Rafe Calderon). In this scene we see an alligator making its way through a slightly damp hallway. This alligator, with it's wet footstep sound being off from when it's actually stepping, is holding a cigarette in it's mouth.
It is an absolutely bonkers but wonderful choice I have not seen anyone bring up. I've not even seen pictures of it when trying to look up this scene. There is no reason for it to be there. It was dropped about twenty minutes into the movie onto the wet floor, and somehow made its way into the mouth of an ever blurry alligator. It has an absolute fantastic constant motion blur on it throughout the entire scene (about three seconds) and it has absolutely no purpose whatsoever. In fact, we never see this alligator again, because it is blown up maybe a minute later.
Truly worth the extra four stars in my opinion. If not for that then this movie would've definitely be the one star everyone else claims it is. From the aforementioned cgi, to the random character add ons that are never brought up again (sheriff Newman's deceased husband (?)), to weird lighting in the first ten minutes of the movie. There are just constant mistakes and production errors that have no excuse even if this had been a low budget film.
Not even to bring up the inaccuracies in behavior for these gators. No gator of that size is struggling for food, and no gator of that size is fitting into a chimney or whatever they squeezed through in those first ten minutes. There is no way an alligator could death roll any of the characters it did. An animal of that size simply cannot roll in a stationary position on dry land it is just logistically impossible. I fear the director or whoever saw a video of a croc or gator pulling off that maneuver on an antelope or something of the sort and decided that they had to put that in the film as many times as possible.
There are so many things one can say about this movie, all negative. I would suggest people watch it with friends if you really want to see it just so you can talk trash. It'll certainly be more entertaining than the actual movie was. From plot devices that made no sense, to a hurricane map that showed a type that doesn't exist, to a clear sunny day in the middle of a very bad storm it never ends. The only bright side was the three seconds of that wonderfully horrible, horrible, blurry alligator with a cigarette. I certainly feel like I need one after watching this.
rohanumpleby-34057 - 4 August 2023 Hillarious, but not in a good way! The film is a low-budget movie so taking that into consideration and leave your expectations low, however this is one of the worst (no exaggeration) movie of the decade. It's the worst low budget movie to feature crocks, and the worst in general. The Dialogue is so bad, it's laughable. Some of the worst lines uttered into a movie. There so bad as one person would be talking about something else, and then another person will go on to talk about something completely different. Feels rather choppy in that kind of sense. I like the action-Sequence we get at the start of the movie, the dialogue was atrocious and I can't believe it was left in the movie, then you've got a crocodile eating him, and the effects are horrible. Some of the worst effects are in this movie. They didn't quite have the right tech to pull these kind of effects off. So what your left with is a weirdly formatted action piece. I will say the effects on the crocodiles are pretty cool though. And with a bigger budget, I'm sure this movie would work well.
I can appreciate the originality in the movie though, and the creator team trying to give us an original movie. The Movie has the Flood, that's where the Crocks come from, but then it has the people from Jail. And them needing a place to stay. That being the police station. The Dialogue is just as atrocious here as it is in the start of the film, for the same reason. And the film feels disconnected, in a way. Because the characters pop out with these random words that doesn't make any sense, and doesn't connect to what the other character was previously saying.
What's good about this film though is the musical score. Some great dark kinda mysterious music, which fits the narrative of the movie, and is the only thing that makes any ounce of sense in this movie. But that's honestly where the positives start and end. Nothing else in this movie is exactly noteworthy. And the lack of depth the characters get isn't good either. The performances were below par, and that's probably down to the awful dialogue. In some scenes you see the actors muttering there lines, which tells you everything you need to know.
Would I recommend this movie? No, not in gods heaven would I recommend this to anyone. Unless you watch it with your friends, but let me remind you that you'll have to turn your brain off. And not question the sanity of this film. It's as bad as the other reviewers have said, and even stated. Now time for me verdict.
Verdict,
1.5/10 I watched it so you don't have to.
paul_haakonsen - 18 July 2023 Essentially just a generic 'with the flood comes the gators' type of movie... Stumbling upon this 2023 thriller titled "The Flood" by random chance here in 2023, and seeing that it was an aligator-based movie with Casper Van Dien, I must admit that I was somewhat intrigued. And thus, I opted to sit down and watch what writers Chad Law and Josh Ridgway had to offer.
Not a whole lot, as it turned out. Nay, "The Flood" turned out to be very bland and run-of-the-mill type of movie with aligators becoming a threat to people during a flood. It has all been done and seen before, so you're not in for anything grand or innovative here. And the movie just never really got up into a proper gear, making it a rather monotonous movie to sit through.
The character gallery in "The Flood" was pretty generic, and you could essentially pluck the characters out of those movie and replace them into any other movie of this type and still end up with the same result. Yeah, the writing for this movie was pretty lazy.
The cast ensemble in "The Flood" was actually fairly okay, with the likes of Casper Van Dien, Louis Mandylor, Nicky Whelan and Kim DeLonghi on the cast list, among others. The acting performances in the movie were as you would expect for a movie such as this, and the actors and actresses weren't really given much contents to work with from the script.
Visually, then I have to admit that I am a bit surprised that movies with this type of fake-looking CGI rendered and animated aligators still see the light of day in 2023. Sure, it wasn't the worst of CGI I have seen, but it was fairly amateurish. And truth be told, a movie such as this can't afford to have questionable CGI, because it just takes away so muchly needed focus from the movie.
Watchable for what it was, "The Flood" is not a movie that is going to wash you away by any means. In fact, the movie came and went without leaving any lasting impression, and the aligators packed almost no bite. If you manage to sit through the 93 minutes one time, chances are high that you will never do so again. I know that I am not returning to watch director Brandon Slagle's 2023 movie "The Flood" a second time.
My rating of "The Flood" lands on a four out of ten stars.
