brandon-mclachlan - 20 June 2024 A great time. Went in blind, and now it's one of my favourite anime films. Surprisingly funny (did not expect the chair), this heartfelt watch certainly isnt perfect and perhaps lapses in the middle as the pacing seems to drag a touch..
Regardless, the film is utterly charming, colourful and tells a unique story that feels as if it's pulled directly from Japanese mythology. Maybe it is?
One thought I had was that I really love how this film addresses the existence of Mobile Phones, Social Media and even A. I - I feel like most movies I see shy away from these things as they over complicate what the story can get away with, but this really worked, like chasing the cat via twitter posts was hilarious to me.

cherold - 14 February 2024 imaginative fantasy road picture In a typically imaginative and visually stunning Makoto Shinkai film, a young woman learns of a secret world and meets a magical cat and a guy the cat doesn't like. There's then a grand adventure of going across country visiting ghost towns with portals to the secret world.
This movie is a little more episodic and a little less romantic than Shinkai's recent films, but it's got an equal amount of charm.
On the other hand I couldn't quite make sense of the mythology this movie built. I'm not sure it makes much sense, and the cat's motives are decidedly opaque. But I guess if you build your mythology off of Japanese mythology, which is apparently what was done, you can kind of figure it must all make sense somehow (much in the way a lot of American movies with Christian mythology built in make cultural sense but are really pretty insane (i.e. Raiders of the Lost Ark).
Anyway, it's a terrific movie and you oughta watch it.
