    Fun and heart
I really love this movie and I've watched it multiple times. It just makes me happy.

Rosaline and Romeo are secretly seeing each other, but when Rosaline misses the Capulet ball, Romeo catches sight of Juliet, and the rest is history. The movie is about Romeo and Juliet, but it's also about Rosaline growing out of her infatuation with Romeo and her jealousy with Juliet. Rosaline can be a bit aggravating at the beginning of the movie, but she redeems herself by the end of the movie. It's a laugh out loud movie (the wheeze in the chapel always gets me), the music is beautiful, and the characters are charming, wise, and hilarious. Just, go watch it.

    Real Life Romance
I created an account just to share this ... I'm a huge Shakespeare fan, his tales are a reflection of the human condition and basically timeless.

However - Romeo and Juliet has always pissed me off because it's punted as a romance.

    Hell NO !

It's two horny teenagers who stupidly confuse lust with love and off themselves thinking they cannot live without each other ..... Give them a few months and they'd be humping other stupid teenagers.

Rosaline is a fantastic Real breath of fresh air And a TRUE romance.

PS soooo much great humor I was crying in parts.

The cast is superb and you get sucked into the story very quickly. Since the.1996 version, the modern re-tellings give a relatable comfort that bypasses the classical language and conditions, showing that the stories of people are unchanging.

    Great actors, lousy writing
The promo for this movie had me interested, but when I sat down to watch it I was seriously let down. I expected a corny, funny, irreverent take on Romeo and Juliet but the writing was lackluster. There were so many opportunities for comedy and dead-pan irony with such great actors but the writers missed the mark. They could have exaggerated all the characters even more, but their hesitancy to commit to comedy left the movie slow-going. It felt like they couldn't decide if they were doing a 21st century retelling of Shakespeare or if they were filming a RomCom inspired by his story. I hate it when the entirety of the movies funny bits are in the trailer.

    Witless snark
It's an intriguing concept that falls flat in execution from the first scene. Did they really think that a young audience wouldn't enjoy this if the dialogue wasn't peppered with "Ew" and "Whatever?"

While one might hope for some inventive wit (see "Shakespeare in Love"), it's mostly just flat and snarky. Despite the lovely period costumes, this might as well be set in a San Fernando Valley high school.

While Kaitlyn Dever is a talented actress, she comes off as a perpetually grumpy drip here, and she's hardly the kind of protagonist that the audience can root for.

There's not much comic or romantic energy to carry the story along, which is a shame. It's an opportunity missed.
