alexpeychev - 23 February 2024 Why are people liking this I went to an screening of the movie with high expectations since I'm a Clint Eastwood fan. The story seemed very promising and heartwarming and knowing Clint Eastwood I expected to cry my eyes out inside the theater. That's not what happened. At all. I almost fell asleep. The movies starts off pretty straight forward and the main story kicks of immediately. It continues to remain interesting for the first half hour but after that it seems like the screen writers had run out of ideas. The plot kinda stops and the only thing we are witnessing are Mike Mailo and Raffa hanging out. Nothing happens to move the plot forward. It's so forgettable that two days have passed and I'm struggling to remember what happened in order to write this review. The acting is also not good at all as Raff's lack of talent is obvious (Eastwood is great as always of course but unfortunately he is not alone in the movie). It's not a bad film but it's extremely unremarkable. You could save yourself some time and money by watching something else.
There had been multiple attempts to get this project made prior to Clint Eastwood's adaptation, as the project remained on a shelf for about 30 years. In 1991, production on an adaptation began in Mexico with actor Roy Scheider in the lead role, but the project was scrapped soon after. Another attempt was made in 2011 with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. It would have marked his return to acting after his term as California Governor, but like the Scheider version, the project was canceled before production could get very far.
alexanderjallan - 30 November 2023 As slow movies go this one takes the biscuit Sheesh...i like slow movies but this one tested my patience. Loved to see Clint acting again but oh boy this was slow and lacking direction and some bits rather repetitive. Like the guy chasing after the boy...he's clearly not very good at his job.
Some things don't click, like Marta interested in a guy 40 years her senior....reminds me of Roger Moore in his latter Bond films. Ok i guess it can happen but in a very straightforward film seems a bit off... and more at home in a quirky movie.
Acting and characters were forgettable. Clint on a wild horse at 91.....um...no that's not believable at least I hope that wasn't him- good grief if it was and he has a death wish.
dharmathug - 23 September 2023 Pretty awful A once excellent director and decent actor needs to hang it up now.
It's painful to see a 90 y o playing the lead role as if he were still a ladies man and virile cowboy capable of doing more than taking an afternoon siesta.
Nothing believable in this contrived story with a decrepit lead barely able to walk let alone be seductive and attractive to middle aged women. Had he given it to a fit 70 y o actor we'd at least have a believable premise to build the story on. As it is, it's beyond the stretch of anyone's imagination. Nothing against geriatrics - there's a place and a story for those genres - but not in this one.
boinkcandy - 24 October 2022 I really liked this movie Like other Clint Eastwood movies, the plot slowly and clearly lays out. Lots of fun scenes in between but keeping the story building and engaging. The characters were solid and Clint Eastwood does such a great job in telling the story. The story is romantic in more than one angle and Clint Eastwood hits the target bullseye. I always loved the music in Clint Eastwood movies and this was no exception. I literally had to watch the movie again because I really enjoyed it.
The screen play from the jukebox scene was so beautifully done. One of the best sequence I've ever seen. Clint Eastwood is truly one of the greatest directors of all time.
ScottoMac - 24 August 2022 Eastwood: fine. Kid: wooden. Result: yawning Clint was good in this, but the story never delivered. The kid was very wooden, which wasn't helped by the story. I kept expecting the kids role to go somewhere: betrayal; acting out; something! But it just kept the original course, and wasn't helped by the ineptitude of the acting. Solid 5/10. Disappointing.
xxocolatl - 29 July 2022 Disappointing But then again the plot was so thin, there probably wasn't much that could have been done to improve. Stilted dialogue, under-developed characters. And one expects so much more from an Eastwood film...
