austinlelievre - 17 May 2024 Squad Solidarity! Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is one of the most relatable movies that I've seen and Ruby Gillman is a very relatable character for me because I was just like her when I was in high school. The movie is very colourful and fun to watch and it feels very well written and filled with good life lessons such as acceptance of differences and having good relationships with the people who are close to you. This is one of my favourite movies of all time and it was well worth the purchase that I made to own it. I love how much the movie emphasizes the importance of knowing who your true friends are. There is nothing about this movie that isn't awesome in my opinion.
leftmeow - 15 March 2024 Cute but incredibly average This movie isn't really anything special. Everything in it has been done before. I agree with other reviewers that this is basically just a carbon copy of Turning Red, with a lot of Luca thrown in. It really feels like a lot of the "cinematic" scenes (the "pretty" scenes that don't really do anything) were just copy and pasted from Luca, eg the scene where Luca and Alberto are swimming toward Porto Rosso and popping up above the water but Luca skids against the surface - almost the exact same thing happens in this movie with Ruby surfacing and "oops teehee I'm so clumsy in my new sea body" does the exact same.
I suppose, how different can a story about a character learning they're a sea monster be, or rather, how different can a scene about learning to swim be. I guess both films wanted to show the characters learning to swim but...seriously, it's like a cut and paste.
Ruby is painfully naive on the verge of dumb.
I'm so tired of the "parent never tells child about incredibly life changing, extremely huge news" trope.
I'm so tired of the "Grandma and Mom don't agree about how to raise kids so they never see each other again for 15+ years" trope.
The kraken designs are... strange? Specifically because they reference the stereotypical kraken so many times in this movie, where is this stereotype coming from in their world if none of them actually look like that, even slightly?
They're not giant sea monsters with tentacles a la Pirates of the Caribbean. They're like mermaids with cuttlefish legs.
Overall the movie is cute, I watched it on a plane, glad I didn't spend money on it. It's incredibly average but not offensive. It's a "just fine" movie.
neelshantha - 20 December 2023 Not worth $5.99,Epic Final Battle, But a Turning red ripoff, The worst dreamworks movie, and multiple references to Generation Z This film, wasn't that bad but DREAMWORKS, ARE YOU TRYING TO ROAST DISNEY! I guess they were, because Chelsea is the Villain, and looks like Ariel . Also this movie, basically has multiple references to, Generation Z. The graphics how ever, are pretty good, and this movie isn't exactly cringe, but is still better than The "Amazing" Maurice. However, Elemental and the movie before this Puss in boots the last wish were still better. The plot is just pointless but relatable, the final battle was very Epic, and this movie is probably better than Sausage party. Still this movie was, not worth $5.99 and getting yelled at by my dad.
