salemzin - 11 June 2024 Was It The Boogeyman? "The Boogeyman" (2023), an adaptation of the short story written by Stephen King, does not meet all the expectations that a mature audience expects from a horror feature, relying on delivering common clichés of the genre to satisfy the young guard.
The film features long dramatic moments that explore the characters' relationships, their personalities and traumas, a positive factor that brings immersion to the script. However, when it comes to the premise and plot, the story sounds generic at several points. Although the actors deliver good performances, there is nothing new for the genre. The work has several repetitive scenes already seen in other productions, making the script predictable and uninspired. The creature has an unremarkable design, which prevents the entity from becoming memorable after the film. Despite the negative points, the film presents several well-executed scenes involving lighting and the perception of the creature in the environment.
The project followed the "mainstream" formula to create a profitable film for the general public. Although there is a lot of talent in the director, writers, cast and production, "The Boogeyman" is not the film where these potentials flourish.
apriljudithking - 17 February 2024 Why is it so hard to get Stephen King right?! Stephen King provides such incredible and frightening material and yet, time and again, filmmakers get it so wrong. This is yet another example. Apparently houses are soundproof, characters investigate instead of cry for help, leave vulnerable characters alone, characters go it alone and, my personal favorite, have cell phones inhand but never properly use them. So many overused tropes and those are just a few. The direction is lazy and unoriginal. I spent most of this film rolling my eyes. If you're a true horror fan, this will NOT do it for you. You'll be bored twenty minutes in. Don't waste your time.
