Atle_O - 18 June 2024 Disappointingly messy I tried to watch Elvis, but I couldn't even finish it. I was really disappointed.
The story is all over the place. It jumps around too much, and I found it hard to follow. The way they told Elvis's life just didn't work for me. It felt rushed and messy.
Austin Butler, who plays Elvis, did his best, but it wasn't enough to save the movie. Some parts of his performance were good, but overall, it didn't feel like Elvis to me. Tom Hanks as Colonel Parker was strange. His accent was weird, and it was distracting.
The music was good because, well, it's Elvis. But the way the movie used the songs felt forced. They didn't flow naturally with the scenes, and it just made everything feel awkward.
The editing and visuals were too flashy and over the top. It was like they were trying too hard to be stylish, but it just made things confusing and hard to watch. The movie felt more like a long music video than a real story about Elvis.
In the end, I gave up and turned it off. I was really hoping for a good movie about Elvis, but this just wasn't it. Save yourself the time and skip this one.
jctmvn - 10 April 2024 This is a movie called Elvis but about his manager, as actors listed to the right > Far Too much self absorbed Tom Hanks and not enough Austin, who was fantastic, skip the dialogue and watch Austin sing, unless you want your Elvis happy bubble burst.
Scenes of only the 2 of them fighting, who the hell knows that happened the way it's portrayed??
I grew up from 2 years old watching ELVIS MOVIES, 1971. In London, ya didn't have to twist it to make it better, He's The King FFS
Parker is only bad guy that ever came across Elvis?
And its doesn't still happen today, Cant wait to see the colonel movie, hope it's about Elvis.
Austin was fantastic. Watch it for his acting as Elvis and singing as Elvis. Forward the rest, please.
vittorio-13 - 22 March 2024 great presentation but this is not a movie about elvis The one thing people have to realize is that this movie is not about elvis. The actor who won best actor did a wonderful job as Elvis and he deserved the award. The way the movie was put together was well done. But other than the actually singing, the movies lacked the real relationship between elvis and the Parker. Yes the Parker was an add and he did a lot to Elvis which in a way it made him what he became. While Elvis on stage was him and he commands the stage. His personal life was a shamble. He was like a spoil kid in a candy store.
I would love to a true Elvis movie the book I enjoyed and wish they would make a tv series out of it. Was the.book Me and a Guy named Elvis. What I loved about this book is that he showed all side of Elvis. The compassion Elvis, the Funny Elvis, the nutty Elvis and the musical talent of Elvis it was a complete 360 degree of Elvis.
thejefflewis-92228 - 7 January 2023 Very little time in the movie are scenes with dialog This movie is primarily told in a journalistic fashion with Tom Hanks narrating. When this is happening, the editing style is very fast. I would say there is an edit about every 1 or 2 seconds. And with all those edits, often several events are interleaved together, making it feel very chaotic. At first, I thought this is just how the beginning of the movie will be to get the story going, but it goes like this for the entire movie. I would say less than 15% of the movie are scenes where characters are delivering dialog. And in those scenes, the dialog was drowned out by background music. So, in short, this movie is horrible at telling a story. I did not feel connected to any of the characters. And come on, playing modern rap in the background. That is a disgrace.
guitargod2112 - 31 December 2022 Embarrassing One of the worst movies ever made. It should win all the Razzies: worst director, worst writing, worst acting, worst editing, worst music (not Elvis's, the "modern" versions for the movie). It is cringeworthy how terrible this movie is. Someone tell Tom Hanks he is allowed to say "No" to projects. Everyone involved should be embarrassed that they were. I would leave this off my resume if I were.
So much quick, distracting editing. Random tantrum bursts from the characters with no precedent. No building of characters. The music has these loud annoying bits. I mean, double bass drum in an Elvis song?!
marcosphoto - 27 December 2022 Gifted the 4K bluray, wish I could exchange. Bluray quality is questionable, dialog terribly difficult to understand - otherwise just ok. The problem is not the technical quality of the media but rather everything about the way the movie was made. I don't think the original mixing of the movie took advantage of sound technology nor was mixed in a fashion where it could ever sound good to begin with. From a video prospective, the editing style was very quick changing scenes, vague representation - almost like a comic book movie. Seems the director wanted an action movie instead of a drama, the movie seemed very confused about it's intentions and genre. If not the director, at least the editing room manager was on something very strong. Acting was mediocre at best, sad and unusual to say but even Hanks. Accents moving in and out, never really convincing. I have to admit, I've never been an Elvis fan - but I've watched many movies that I can appreciate even though I'm not a fan of the subject matter. Sorry Hanks and everybody else, 4 stars from me. Don't get offended, can't satisfy everybody.
desertrose0601-690-503760 - 21 December 2022 Meh Kinda boring and way too long. Honestly it made me like Elvis less. Took the magic out of it. I'm too young to have been around when he was alive, but seeing this makes me realize how much of a gimmick he was made into. He's got a good voice, I'll give him that. But I don't care for all the flash and gimmick. I suppose those were different times then. If you're looking for a more heartfelt music biopic, I recommend Bohemian Rhapsody. You come away really feeling for Freddie and Queen. I can't say the same for Elvis in this movie, unfortunately. Watch this if you're curious but I wouldn't say it's especially good.
anninaturman - 11 December 2022 If only they had used original footage as well... ... this movie would have been 100 x better than it was. For me the most enjoyable part of the movie was the last 2 minutes with the REAL Elvis performing. Scenes lasting 5 seconds for 2/3rd of the movie just made it a blur to watch. Not to mention so much screentime spent on irrelevant things (that Singer sponsored Christmas sweater) and skipping Elvis getting his first guitar, or how he paid for his first recording himself, how people said he couldn't play the guitar etc., all which were completely ignored in this story. And I'm sure the brilliant B. B. King and others mentioned had a big influence on Elvis, but this much focus on that alone seems weird - especially when so little focus on how his mother's death affected him (later addiction to drugs partly due this) or how he made his way in Hollywood as an actor, an experience which surely helped him with the Vegas shows, transforming into someone else. And rap music mixes? Really?
Acting was ok but nothing special, mr Butler's complete lack of sense of humor as Elvis just made this portrayal mimicking and stiff, as much effort as he obviously has put into his acting here it just didn't convince me, as a fan of the King.
To sum up, seems like just another way to make money off a dead legend, much like 'Blonde' about Marilyn, only this one with the Estate's approval, who basically live off his earnings today. Recommend watching Elvis Comeback Special instead of this mess.
bellcurrier-67395 - 3 December 2022 Truth is Not Marching On Here.... This is arguably the worst acting that Tom Hanks has ever done. The Col. Parker "accent" that he put on he simply could not pull off. It rang fake, and at times his own clear voice came through unbidden.
The directors and script writers Buz Lurhmann, Sam Bromell, Craig Pierce and Jeremy Doner made what will go down in motion picture history as the worst Elvis Presley rendering made. This idea was a mistake in its inception. You do not take the 1950s through the 1970s and try to attact the 2020s by instilling the 21rst century and stitching inappropriately into history. It simply does not and did not work. What a mess of confusion and inaccuracy.
Austin Butler as Elvis, Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla, and Helen Thomson as Gladys (Elvis's mom) are the best highlights in an otherwise disjointed mess. Their acting is outstanding in this film. It is a pity that their efforts were not applied to a better screenplay, direction, and production.
Somesweetkid - 21 November 2022 Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker?? Ludicrous!!!!! What an exercise in conceit on Tom Hanks' part. First, Mr. Rogers and now Colonel Tom Parker - Elvis's life-long, blood-sucking manager? The role of Parker should have been given to an unknown, just like the role of Fred Rogers. Even with his ridiculous prosthesis and puffy face mask, you could still see Tom Hanks underneath, and there was absolutely NO WAY to suspend your disbelief. What next, Tom Hanks in a remake as Ghandi? I wouldn't be surprised. So disappointing. In addition, his feigned "Colonel Parker" wannabe accent just sounded like Tom Hanks with an idiotic accent. Probably no one alive today knew what Parker sounded like anyway, so not sure what hat he pulled that out of. And the pomposity of him narrating the movie on top of assuming the role, I could not get past that travesty and finish the movie. What a joke.
