jimmymick - 2 March 2024 So much potential First and foremost, Allison Janney is amazing and the rest of the cast is fabulous. Anna Forrester creates great images and pacing in this interesting and compelling story. Unfortunately, it suffers from a VERY weak script and a total lack of character development. The veteran actors do everything in their power to add dimensions to this rudderless story.
The concept is a very interesting and hooks you in early on. But no sooner do we get the appetizer which is the mystery of Lou, who is shown to be a first class bad ass, than we are served up with clumsy suspense tropes and awkward dialog.
The sad part is that all the elements are there to make a seriously great movie. Once the stakes have been established, we get some unnecessary action which could have been better spent building the characters and the suspense. But, alas, we are left with an anemic main course. By the time we get to the climax of the story, the big reveal is fumbled and we are hastily pushed through the conclusion.
The ending is satisfying, if not predictable. The fact that the veteran actors hold your attention and interest, makes this a good movie, even if there is so much potential left out of the script .
sarah-grimes - 6 August 2023 Better than I expected! I wasn't sure about watching this film as I seen the average reviews was 6. However, I was pleasantly surprised. My go to film is thrillers, mainly psychological ones. This one is more of an action type thriller but was just as enjoyable. Don't get me wrong there was moments (such as the fighting scenes) when you do think "Hmm, really?" But it's a FILM, if films was exactly like real life then it would be pretty boring. I think it was gritty and the actors did a great job, especially the little girl. Loved the dog and how loyal he was. I don't understand how people could say it didn't make sense? It made total sense. Could the story have been elaborated more? Perhaps but then in my opinion it would have dragged the film on. Lou wasn't really a likeable character but I liked that because I think in a lot of films they make you like the main character. Lou was flawed which showed why (possibly) her son turned out bad. I do think they should have let Chris live (the male friend of Hannah). That would have been nice to see him leave the island with her & Vee.
killercharm - 23 December 2022 basic b-flat fare Just ok flick about a woman who runs away to Orcas Island in the San Juans to hide out with her little daughter. The lone old lady who lives with her dog and is the neighbor/landlady, Lou, sets out to help her find that daughter when the little girl is abducted by her bad-boy daddy. This is a story of women setting out to chase down a man and the little girl he snatched in a soggy downpour. We see them in all kinds of treachery, near-death, mud, pain, injuries, chased down by bad guys and good, and yet I never really am able to rustle up a care. I don't get invested in the back story or the acting because it's all basic b-flat fare. Not only that but every step is anticipated. When the CIA flies in I couldn't care less. Except Jax, he's cool, but I could tell what was coming up with him, too.
nevillenicol-77-710070 - 15 November 2022 One of the Dumbest movies on Netflix ever!! Well this is one of the dumbest Netflix movies I've seen in a long time. Alison Janney plays this tough hardened wilderness type woman who lives in a small town, who apparently has some sort of past that was about to be made known so she set up a tarp in her house made a letter explaining what she did so long ago (vaguely) takes out all her money from the bank, and leaves it for her tennet and her little girl and is about to kill herself. So cut to the Tennant, it begins to storm and she tells her little girl that her Daddy died and then as she tucks her in, the lights go out, it's her fake dead ex-husband and he takes their little girl and runs. She goes to Lou's house to ask for help and saves her from killing herself and they go out to hunt down the ex husband. Turns out Lou was in the CIA that's how she was able to kill the other guys who were hired by the ex husband to help find his ex wife. So later on they find the ex and the little girl, turns out the ex husband is Lou's son who was left behind when Lou chose the CIA over him, and he is trying to kill her and take his daughter back. Boy talk about a convoluted plot!!!
cruise01 - 29 October 2022 Action thriller with a great performance by Allison Janney and June Smith. 4 out of 5 stars.
Lou is a good action thriller film that puts Allison Janney in the action role with her taking the beating and fighting back.
The plot is good and a bit hallow with its story. It follows Hannah (Jurnee Smollett) and her daughter Vee. Living in a small town in Washington. Renting a house from Lou (Allison Janney) who is a loner and struggling with her arthritis and her past. When Vee gets kidnapped and taken into the forest. Hannah asks Lou for help which she will take matters into her hands with tracking Vee and the kidnappers.
The plot is thin and hallow with its story. It does have a twist that is not as surprising. It is a thriller following Lou and Hannah as they travel through the forest during a storm and trying to beat the race against time with catching up to the kidnappers. The action sequences are okay and entertaining.
Allison Janney did great with her performance. Along with Jurnee Smith who also did great with her role as well. It is one entertaining film that is worth the watch but the plot is thin and forgettable.
mason25 - 18 October 2022 Fairly decent 45 minutes in and the mother is an idiot.
She's specifically told to not use the radio, because it could only alert her ex, so she wants a bit and does it anyway, only to alert him....
Then they stop for a break to warm up, Janney spills some matches, and whilst unlikely to have been waterproof, she just sits there like a stupid btch and watches them float by in a tiny stream under her legs.
55 minutes and she's trying to use the radio again and not even hiding it.
Mom decides to finally do the smart thing and shoot her ex, twice no less, then resume being stupid bu going to stand right over top of him so he's close enough to disarm her....
All in all though, good movie, nice to see a woman taking a Bourne style role and making it look believable. Not enough well done movies of the ilk.
