Solid Film For One of the Best Series of All-Time!
While this theatrical release may not be quite on par with some of the TV film specials that came between the seasons of the show, it's still a true delight!

My favorite part of this film was seeing Tom Branson finally find someone. It's almost ironic that it's a "maid" who happens to be Lady Bagshaw's daughter and heiress, a cousin to the Crawleys. The chemistry between Tom and Lucy is priceless. Tuppence Middleton--with that great smile of hers!--is a perfect fit for Tom.

Violet is up in arms when Lady Bagshaw shows up, demanding to know who she plans to declare as her heir. With a family secret of her own, Lady Bagshaw shocks Violet by telling her that her maid, Lucy Smith will be. With the peerless Imelda Stanton playing Lady Bagshaw, this sets up some more wonderful scenes between Maggie Smith and Stanton.

We also get a battle between the Downton downstairs staff and the Royal household, who dismiss the Downton staff with a wave of their hands. This sets up a great scene in which the Downton staff decide that they will have none of it! This leads to a pricelessly hilarious scene involving Moseley!

We also get a fitting dance sequence at the end of the film as well, with Tom dancing with Lucy outside because she is unable to dance with the others because she's a "maid."

The only part of the film that seemed a bit out of place, was the assassination attempt on King George. While it was great for Tom to play the hero, it didn't make sense that Mary would suddenly doubt his intentions, as it's played as if Tom might be involved. This demonstrates that Mary doesn't know Tom very well, even after all of these years, and that he's not the same man he used to be. Tom has always abhorred violence, and he would never jeopardize his family--let alone his life with his daughter. The writers went out on a limb with this one, and it simply doesn't quite work.

Any Downton fan will love the film. The only downside is that if you haven't watched the series, you'll have a hard time following the characters. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just means that if you haven't sunk your teeth into one of the best series ever made, then it's time to start!

    Where are all the scenes
I felt like I was watching bits and pieces of extra scenes filmed during the TV seasons, which were then all squashed into a 2 hour long movie. Don't get me wrong, I loved the television series completely. But so many plots in this movie seemed to be missing key scenes which would have given the storyline more context. For example the assassination attempt or the blossoming romance between Tom and the maid. It seems the viewer wasn't shown many scenes which would have strengthened the credibility and storyline of these sub plots... There must have been more of a story and scenes between Tom and the assassin. One minute they meeting, the next minute Tom is tackling him to the ground. Same for the romance. So much missing.

    What is this?!
I have to say, I don't even bother to check series, as they are so rarely even average, but I'm told Downton Abbey was a hit. I did not watch any of the series, and after the watching the movie, I would recommend against it.

Now, about the movie. It a mishmash of a South American telenovela, in a colonial British setting, with a plethora of great actors, with little story line, more looking like an extended series episode, very little character building, lacking a real director. Because of to the crowd of good actors and limited characters, and side stories, the actors tend to monopolize the screen with their talent, but going against the viewer. All the side stories want to be in the spotlight, have a large critical point, trying to go for the heart of the viewer on each story, to the direct detriment of movie as whole. The filming is almost too much, all of it in glow light, trying to overdo the sense of golden era.

All in all a recommendable miss, it feels like industrial plastic made now with an aroma of a certain "golden age". No reason to see it.

    huge fan
I loved the series and love this movie ! It is, just like the series, perfectly made, the acting, the costumes, the locations, the character lines, etc. I almost feel a bit lonesome now because it ended ( i bingewatched the series)

I am curious about the new feature "A New Era" !!
