wrigco - 26 May 2024 enjoyable caper I really enjoyed this movie, despite the polarising reviews here I actually found it quite entertaining. Pierce Brosnan as an ageing "fixer" for some mob pulls it off and I found the repartee between him and the excellent Morena amusing despite an "ick" factor due to the age difference. I just can't get past that - thankfully there was no physical stuff to reinforce this factor.
That aside, it was easy watching. There wasn't anything to strain your concentration and worry about plot twists and contra twists and so on, so popular nowadays.
It's not meant to be an action movie either, so leave those expectations at the door. Nevertheless there are a number of creative deaths and James Caan in his last role adds a level of poignancy. Sharon Gless was a hoot too, I would have loved to have seen more of her!
t-d-t-m82 - 28 March 2024 Die Hard meets Le Samurai Some nice visual sequences. Some nice acting and a script which is very overused and overdone but is pulled-off in just a nice and refreshing way but not in a particularly wow or standing-ovation type way either.
It's just well-constructed and it has a lot of nice dialogue and Pierce does a solid job of an aging hitman seeking revenge. Morena Baccarin as the 'love interest'/heroine he constantly saves is a sound actress and absolutely gorgous.
It's sad that this is James Caan's last movie and the acting is overall exactly what one would expect from these kind of movies.
The only problems is it's a bit of lacklustre genre and falls a little short. The end is very cliched and it is what you see in so many films and it's predictable but that's what happens when you have so many scripts around and have to find something unique. It does enough to pull the view in and is a fun and enjoyable popcorn movie but nothing much more.
I find it harder to give it more than a 7 as it's so nice to see Pierce kick arse on the big screen. The tone was good and pace was excellent and the concept was good but there's just so much of this kinda movie already and there's better options.
ayoreinf - 18 March 2024 A slow, fast moving, action movie. The key word in this slow thriller is "character driven". Namely, the entire story is driven by the characters we see on screen. Most of them are flesh and blood ones even when we get very minimal acquaintance with them. The movie is very quick when it comes to character building. See how quickly we get to know Blade and figure him out. And that's just one such example. Basically, the characters in this movie are written superbly, and obviously the actors do their share. With Pierce Brosnan and Morena Baccarin topping the list of a very good cast, in which even very short cameos count. (Think about Sharon Gless).
The story is not an original, and very few surprises are really surprising, but it doesn't matter, since the characters are so well written you want to know what will happen to them almost as soon as you get to know them. So, you stay through. I did, and I believe that if you'll give it the chance, you will too.
