Comments
austinjamespatrick - 12 April 2024 Surprised By Low Ratings The most frequent negative comments I see is that the story didn't show the negative side of Mr Richard who essentially was not a good father to his first born children and they didn't emphasize it enough in the movie. While I guess that takes some points off, I'm not sure how that really affects the quality of the movie. Besides that, I thought the movie was great. Will Smith was phenomenal, there were a number of great scenes and great shots, and the story kept you watching. This isn't a traditional sports movie either, as it's not about the "big match" or the "championship". It really is more a story of King Richard and how his unique coaching style led the Williams sisters to stardom. I go back and forth between an 8 or 9 but since it's a sports movie at the end of the day I will go with an 8.
matibuffi - 29 December 2023 If you like tennis LOOK AT IT, if you don't like it that much I recommend that you give it a chance It is a movie that surprised me, being a tennis lover I was expecting a movie like any other tennis movie (that does not exceed 6 points). I made a mistake
Important points:
The adaptation of the characters is simply perfect, it places you in the time and place of the events.
The recreation of the tennis scenes are generally done with a staging that leaves much to be desired. In this film it is recreated to perfection, impeccable work
Will Smith's performance is a work of art
The narration of the story is perfect, it leaves nothing to chance and touches on the themes with the right time and moment.
Ruskington - 12 September 2023 A very pleasant movie on the surface... For the most part, King Richard is an enjoyable and captivating watch. It plays out like the standard cheesy Hollywood Sports movie and does a very good job at that.
There are however, at least for the more cynical amongst us, a couple if major issues.
Firstly, the portrayal of Richard Williams is at best generous and at worst misleading. He is depicted as a fairly loveable tryer and devoted Dad but there is very little mention of his illegitimate children and previous failed relationship/s. And as many others have mentioned, it does feel at times like the Williams sisters themselves are little more than a sideshow to 'The King's.
It is also hard not to feel that this film was written with the Best Actor Oscar for Will Smith very much in mind. There are a few too many contrived scenes for my liking and seeing both Smith and his wife in the credits doesn't sit right.
Overall, a well-made vanity project for both Smith and Williams.
Dandido - 27 November 2022 Entertaining and interesting but too much fighting King Richard is an interesting movie following the childhood of Venus and Serena Williams, and the training from their father Richard Williams. The focus is on Venus Williams.
I liked the great performances from the whole cast - Will Smith's performance especially. I also enjoyed learning about the childhood of Venus and Serena Williams.
The one thing that brought this movie down for me was the constant fighting. It felt like for about half the movie people were just arguing, fighting and shouting at each other. Really tiring. Please learn to disagree in a productive way.
All-in-all a movie that's worth watching.
asoho - 23 August 2022 Will Smith horrible acting Movie was ok, not horrible but you know how this movies always are people doubt them and at the end they make it. Not very original at all, the worst part was Will Smith acting he basically did the same role for Pursuit of Happiness or 7 pounds. No range at all!! He's face is also very annoying.
saqibhussainrashdi - 16 July 2022 Best Sports Biography film i ever watched Very Beautiful film and outstanding acting of Will Smith who awarded what he deserved i really enjoyed it. They do Great job all the actresses... Amazing movie.
